Medigap Shopping: Closing the Book & Rate Increases

What happens when a company “closes the book”? If I understand it, it means they no longer offer the plan? So what happens if you have that plan? Is it cancelled? Does it enable you to find another one with guaranteed issue? How exactly does it work?

Medigap part G high deductible Florida users

I’ve found a lot of helpful answers here made by some of the other folks who replied. ;D I appreciate everyone who replied. The hard thing was finding info on the high deductible plans because agents don’t like to tell you about them it seems due to the lower commission.

Medigap part G high deductible Florida users

Thank you so much for sharing. This is the plan I was hoping to find more info on. What did you mean by saying “I understand that if I develop major health problems I may pay more if/when I meet the HD deductible.” I thought with the HD plan, once you meet the maximum out of pocket for the...

Medigap part G high deductible Florida users

Amazing! What a useful resource. This answers all my questions. Except I did notice that a few of the plans I was quoted by Boomer Benefits were lower there than what they quoted me. That was interesting to learn.

WSJ - Big mistakes people make in Medicare

Can you explain a bit further? I too am enrolled in the VA health care system but planned to get Medicare when eligible as well as a supplement plan. Are you saying because I’m enrolled in the VA health care system I am not required to purchase a part D prescription drug plan? I take no drugs...

Medigap part G high deductible Florida users

Yes, you are correct. I’d already been there. Can’t find anyone yet regarding the United American plan which some have recommended. Calling the company was a waste of time- have to find a broker to get any info. And I have confirmed the United Health Care Plan option is available starting June...

Medigap part G high deductible Florida users

It’s crazy how nobody can answer my question and the subject gets changed to why someone else thinks the plan I asked is not for them. Maybe someone in Florida who has the high deductible G plan will eventually provide some feedback. The info about United Health Care/AARP being a HD- G plan to...

I called them first and was very disappointed with the agent I was assigned to. Not impressed at all.

Medigap part G high deductible Florida users

Do you have an agent or broker who can give info on the United American plan? The one broker I found would not even speak to me until my husband was actually signed up for part A and B (not helpful at all). He starts coverage July 1st. I was able to call United Health Care and did confirm they...

I’m having some trouble finding carriers that offer the plan G high deductible option in Florida. Any Florida retirees have such a plan and can you share the name of the provider and are you happy with your choice?

Balancing an advance on kids' inheritance

I don’t think the folks here are being snowplow parents. At least in my case it’s not about removing obstacles. It’s more about wanting to find something to spend money on to reduce the size of my estate. Why not give while you can so you can do the most good? That’s the problem. Making sure...

Balancing an advance on kids' inheritance

That’s might be a good solution for me and my spendthrift son. I have zero qualms gifting to my financially responsible daughter and would like to gift equal amounts to her financially irresponsible brother in a way that might protect him and not enable more bad decision making. Is there a name...

Balancing an advance on kids' inheritance

I 100% agree with trying to keep things equal. I’m in a position of wanting and needing to give money away now. I tend to reward the responsible one and am hesitant to give equally to the irresponsible one now because it enables more irresponsibility. It would be like flushing money down the...

Another analysis: Why Early Social Security Provides the Greatest Spousal Benefit

Doesn’t it make sense to take it early when you absolutely don’t need it? This allows you to spend less of your own retirement money and allow it to grow. For someone who can’t possibly outlive their savings, it seems to me taking it early is a good choice.

    Blueprint Income: Legit website?

That makes sense. I put your 750k number into the USAA annuity calculator and it would pay me $3806 a month. I suppose your age must factor into the monthly payout amount. So I made myself 10 years older and it changed to $4358. In both cases I elected a 20 year guaranteed period. It must all...

    Blueprint Income: Legit website?

Can you explain how you calculated those rates? I have a deferred annuity that just matured. I need to either lock it in to another term or annuitize it. If I leave it alone it only pays the minimum guaranteed rate of 1%. This is with USAA. I’ve used their calculator to determine the amount of...

    Updated IRMAA estimates for 2025

It will be a combination of depreciation recapture and capital gain of about 200k. Combined with my rental and investment income which should be somewhere between 100k-150k and being a single filer, I’m going to be in IRMMA territory for sure.

    Updated IRMAA estimates for 2025

Ok. That’s what I thought. I’m selling a house in 2024 which is going to affect my Medicare rate which I’ll be eligible for in 2026 (the year I turn 65). I wonder, what is the window to sign up for Medicare? I don’t turn 65 until the very end of the year. Could I wait to file for Medicare...

    Updated IRMAA estimates for 2025

So how does the IRMMA two year look back work. If you are turning 65 in 2026 are the looking at your taxes from 2024 and 2025?

    Gifting with a warm hand

Yes, I’m praying for a good outcome. I am very conscientious about being fair and equal with both of them. And the last thing I’d every want to do is reward the financially irresponsible one and leave out the responsible who should be the one being rewarded. So in this case I gave her a house...

    Gifting with a warm hand

I have one of these that matured this year. Or shall I say last year. I’ve done nothing with it due to the tax hit and already being hit with IRMMA when I’m eligible in two years. I don’t know what to do with it other than roll it into another contract period so it doesn’t sit their earning the...

I "made" $65K today. Why am I having a hard time donating to charity???

That’s a great point. I guess you need to look at your whole net worth and hold onto whatever number makes you comfortable. It would be nice to know realistically what those last years with no family could potentially cost just to get and idea if you have it covered so you know what your excess is.
