Well, I was anticipating pushing to 2025 due to not having enough money to retire until then. However, due to side income, a bit of increase in salary, and reasonable market performance since my last update, it seems I've almost reached my number. If I retired today, FIRECalc says I'd have a...

    Blow That Dough - 2022

Elite Dangerous (space flying) and Microsoft Flight Simulator currently. Though since MW2 just came out and warzone 2 is about to launch, I'm mostly playing CoD for the next couple months probably.

    Blow That Dough - 2022

Built a new gaming PC setup. Hopefully this one will last me another 5+ years before it's time to upgrade any of the new parts. PCPartPicker Part List CPU: Intel Core i7-12700KF 3.6 GHz 12-Core Processor ($358.97 @ Amazon) CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($89.90 @...

Yeah, my investments are back down to about where I finished 2020 at now, so there's a strong likelihood that 2024 will not be enough time to get to where I'd like to be. I'll probably be pushing to 2025 myself.

    Learning another language?

I've been learning Spanish very slowly for about 3 years. I had a 840 day streak on Duolingo, but many of those days were just "do a quick lesson to keep the streak alive" days. I have almost 500 crowns there. I have got some online tutoring (1 on 1) for a bit in there as well. Last year I...

Poll:How many here have a defined benefit pension?

I didn't get a chance to answer poll (it's closed) but I have VA disability, which is COLA adjusted, so pretty much the same thing.

Poll:To those who retired or retiring very soon - what is your comfy withdrawal rate?

I'm 45, planning on retiring before I'm 50. The optimistic goal was 2024, I'll likely be pushing that now, but maybe not. Either way, the initial withdrawal rate is "planned" to be ~6.4%, but that drops to about ~5.5% in 2024 as one bill falls away. Then, in 2027 it drops again to ~4% when the...

    mandatory "fun" in the office

In the military, this was a BIG thing. Less so once I went to the civilian world, but still "encouraged" for sure. A friend started a brewery, it's called Mandatory Fun Beer Works in collaboration with a meadery they're part of. https://www.facebook.com/MFBeerWorks/

    Online Selling and Shipping Costs

Yeah, I just want to reiterate that using online shipping sites like Parcelmonkey etc. can save you a LOT of money on shipping. I recently sent a ~20lb package across the country (GA to CA). UPS and USPS prices were around $60 for the cheapest and slowest option for either. Through parcelmonkey...

    Travel hopes for 2022

Mexico trip went very smoothly. Three of us went (friend, myself, and my sister). We had a lot of fun doing some easy dives with my sister the first few days (I just finished training her in January, so these were her first dives post certification) and ate a bunch of good food. The last few...

    good firecalc %

95% or better is my goal. My FIRE plans include lots of "wiggle room" though. For instance, my planned spending levels are equivalent to my current expenses despite knowing that I'll have paid off my car right before my currently planned FIRE point and that I'll pay off my house about 3-4 years...

Mid-year update. 79.4% of the total goal, 66.x% of the investment goal. I only planned to reach 67.6% of the investment goal by the end of the year and I'm already 84% of the way there, so here's to hoping things keep progressing as they have been.

Poll:Is $1 Million still a relevant number nowadays for 2 retirees?

As for the original question, it's not going to put you in the same style that a person could live when "being a millionaire" was first becoming something that more than a few elite aspired to, but in the right location and with the right lifestyle choices it can be plenty for a couple if...

Poll:Is $1 Million still a relevant number nowadays for 2 retirees?

Depends on what you call a yacht. You can buy what is realistically called a sailing yacht for low-6 figures. A yacht akin to what JFK sailed will run you closer to a million though, which is still quite affordable if you've got $40-60 million sitting around.

How long did your parents work?

At ~65 my mom stopped working due to disability. My dad kept working until he was 67 iirc. Both started working in their teens. Both with partial college education. Dad a white collar executive for most of his life, mom in a variety of low-education/skill required positions from bank teller to...

Wow, I'm really surprised yours makes that much noise. I have a 16kw Generac whole home generator and it sits right outside the master bedroom window. Best All-Time Actor?

Can't argue with Tom Hanks and Meryl, but I think Ed Norton could actually tie them for how well he's acted. Give him the same longevity in Hollywood and I wouldn't be surprised to see him demonstrate that he could even be better. Leonardo DiCaprio is underrepresented here imo, he's an amazing...
