Considering a retirement move out of town/state

We retired 6 years ago and immediately moved away from the town where we lived for 30 years. Really liked the town we lived in and raised our kids in. But, we wanted to create a “new chapter” in our lives. Not because there was anything wrong with the life we were living, it was fine and we...

Tax treatment of Discounted Treasury bonds or strips

Sorry if this is too detailed or technical for this forum. Trying to do my taxes and like many have purchased a bunch of individual issue bonds over the last couple years. How is the discount on a treasury treated for income tax purposes. Example: Bought $100,000 treasury on Jan 1, 2023...

    3 Years Into Retirement

Congrats! We Retired 5 years ago at age 53. Still can’t believe how great it feels. Wether it is sitting on the beach mid week, no longer feeling that Sunday afternoon “have to work tomorrow” thing, even mowing the yard feels better than being on conference calls or chasing work deliverables...

    Fixed Income Investing II

Thanks for all the info. Yes, I do all my investing through Merrill. I will go into the screener and see what I can find. I do have access to fidelity and Schwab as well, so I can see if they make this info more readily available.

    Fixed Income Investing II

I have found building out my ladder kind of fun and easy over the last 8 months. I now have about 50% of our portfolio in a ladder that extends out about 10 years…. 5 year average duration, yielding a bit over 5.25%. Good quality investment grade corporates. My question is to those that have...

Does budgeting change how you spend money?

When we were working we had a “savings budget”. Simply set a $ amount that we wanted to save for the year and then spent the rest. Now that we are retired, we have a spending budget. A set $ amount that we are comfortable spending for the year. We are disciplined people and usually spend...

We are entering a "Golden Period" for fixed income investing

We are entering a "Golden Period" for fixed income investing Seems safest to read prospectus or speak to bond desk. The 3 or 4 times I have spoken to bond desk they have indicated that the MWC could be done at anytime throughout the life of the bond. In all of these cases, there...

We are entering a "Golden Period" for fixed income investing

We are entering a "Golden Period" for fixed income investing Make Whole Calls can be called at any time. On the finra site they use the term “continuously” to describe the call period. I don’t think the date you are seeing means anything when it is a make whole call bond.

Thanks for all the input Freedom - I am just trying to gauge when to extend maturities. If your average duration is 4.8 years, would it be fair to say that about 1/3 of your ladder has maturities at 7 years or longer? Thanks again for all the guidance you have provided!

Freedom 56 - why are you focused on 1-5 year maturities? If one believes rates will be much lower in 3-5 years, why not build out a 10 year ladder with high grade corporates and secure these higher rates for a much longer period? Thanks for any thoughts.

    Make Whole Call

I searched, but did not see this covered. I have done some on-line research and read prospectus language for a “Make Whole Call (MWC)” provision on a bond. Can someone help explain it in simple English. To use an example, if I bought a 7% coupon bond for 110.00 maturing in 2031 with a MWC...
