    Knee replacements

DH had his second full knee replacement 2 months ago, has done great, even better than his first knee. Very little pain or swelling. He is back walking 3 miles at a time, can (slow) dance already and should be able to play golf this summer.

    Cataract Surgery Options

I am one of those rare people who can do monovision--I use one eye for reading and one for distance. Back in the day when I wore contacts that is what I did and when I had Lasik I only did one eye-- just for distance and read out of my other eye. No problems. I now need cataract surgery and...

    Alpha-gal

A few years ago I started breaking out in hives and had mouth swelling for no apparent reason. Doctor tested me for many things including Alpha Gal. Fortunately I was negative for Alpha Gal but the tests show I had developed an allergy to diary (allergic to a protein in dairy). So no milk...

Good friend just died of Pancreatic Cancer

Thanks for this, great news. The question will be who gets screened? Probably would not have helped my friend because she did not have any risk factors but this will be of help to her daughter and grandchildren since there is a genetic factor for pancreatic cancer.

    Moved into CCRC today

In my opinion the good, highly desirable CCRCs, especially the Type A kind, will always have long waiting lists. At my CCRC the residents live much longer than the average life expectancy, probably because they had to be healthy to get in and also because we have good medical care, fitness...

    Moved into CCRC today

Here in North Carolina you can go to the NC Department of Insurance website and find Disclosure Statements for all the CCRCs in North Carolina. The Disclosure Statement includes all the fees for the CCRC, occupancy rates and the CCRC's financial statements.

Good friend just died of Pancreatic Cancer

The guy who is still alive--they must have found it very early to enable them to do surgery. That would be my hope--some blood test or something to detect it early so that surgery could be done. For my friend who died last night--when she was diagnosed a month ago it was at stage 4, already...

Good friend just died of Pancreatic Cancer

My friend who just died from Pancreatic cancer was very active in her Church and had the whole Church was praying for her. I go to another Church and we all prayed for her too. In fact the whole community where we lived prayed. Now I pray that some early detection and treatment will be found...

Good friend just died of Pancreatic Cancer

Thanks for this. I read that pancreatic cancer is fairly rare but I hope that there could be some early detection method developed like a blood test.

Good friend just died of Pancreatic Cancer

Good friend, same age as me (72) died a couple of hours ago from pancreatic cancer. She was the picture of health until about a month ago when she started feeling tired and had some minor stomach pain. She thought it might be Covid but tested negative. She went to her doctor, had many tests...

Long Wait Time to get Appointment with Dermatologist

Around here it takes at least 6 months to get a dermatologist appt unless you can somehow convince them you have melanoma. If you need MOHS surgery for basal cell another 6 months. If you have Melanoma they get you into MOHS surgery in a few weeks. The problem is that all us Baby Boomers are...

Gift Idea For Relative With Cancer

I just gave a good friend with cancer a walker, shower chair and bed tray that I no longer needed. They said that was what they needed and they are using them everyday.

    using up the PT benefit

Are you asking about traditional Medicare or Medicare Advantage? At one time there was a limit on the number of physical therapy visits traditional Medicare would pay in a year (I think it was 100 hundred visits) but it is my understanding that limit is gone and traditional Medicare has no...

    New Star Trek Movie Coming

Paramount Plus is one of the few streaming services I subscribe to and I do it solely to watch Star Trek. The final season of Star Trek Discovery has just started and so far the first 3 episodes have been good, better than the other season I think. I am rewatching Deep Space Nine, love that...

    After I'm Gone

Depends how long you live. My mom is in her 90s and I am in my 70s and trying to handle her finances and well my own has been a hardship to me.

    After I'm Gone

As for the around the house things--I am glad we are living in a CCRC that handles most of all that. DH can even hire the CCRC to do the laundry when I am gone.

    After I'm Gone

I suggest that people simplify their finances as they get older. I have had to take over the finances for my 92 year old mother and it was a mess--assets scattered everywhere. It has taken me hours and hours of work and still more to do. I could just scream. For myself I have simplified to...

My CCRC is not on that list! But my mother's CCRC is and in my opinion my CCRC is far superior to the one mother is in.

    Moved into CCRC today

I am not much help on choosing a CCRC. I knew I wanted to stay in my town and there are 4 CCRCs--I toured them all but after looking at the numbers I decided I wanted a Type A Life Care. My mother is in a fee for services CCRC and it has turned out to be very expensive. If you live a long...

    Moved into CCRC today

Might be a good idea to get on the waiting list now. If the wait list is around 10 years you would be 77 when you got in. We are a little younger than the average age here at our CCRC--average age probably late 70s, we are 73 but we seem to fit in fine, there are many our same age and younger...

    Moved into CCRC today

OP here--things are still going great for us at our CCRC. DH is a little over a month from total knee replacement and his doctor says is is doing very well. He still has a couple of more weeks before he is OK'd to drive so it is very helpful that he can got to rehab right here in our building...

    Moved into CCRC today

Mine was around $400,000 for a one bedroom and den here in NC and I chose the no refund option. If I had chosen the option to get a refund to my estate it would have been more. Mine is a type A Life Care with all the bells and whistles included. There are less expensive CCRCs in my area but...
