    54 wannabe Snowbird

We spend mid-Apr to mid-Dec in Wisconsin and mid-Dec to mid-Apr in Key Largo, FL each year. We rent the same home in Key Largo. We initially found the home through VRBO but after the 1st year, we started renting directly with the owner, saving us both VRBO fees. The home is in a nice quiet...

Rental car -- liability with additional drivers from other households

I just asked my insurance agent about this a week ago. I was told that its important to have all the drivers sign the rental agreement. They also need to have an auto insurance policy that would cover the rental car when they are driving. The agent said my insurance would cover the rental car...

Proceed or walk away from new house build

We signed our contract in early December for construction that is just starting now (excavation is scheduled for next week). Our builder ordered all significant materials (windows, siding, doors, fireplace, generator, cabinets, etc.) right after the contract was signed to try to minimize price...

    The I Bond Thread

I got the same message when I set up my Treasury Direct account last year. I completed form FS 5512, had my banker sign it, and sent it to TD. TD rejected the form saying the signature on the form was not acceptable. I called TD to find out what was wrong and how to fix it. Talking with TD I...

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) - 2021 version

Family Use of YouTubeTV Family members do not necessarily have to live in the same area to share YouTubeTV. We use 1 YouTubeTV subscription to cover our 2 homes in WI (75 miles apart) and our son uses it in MN. The key is there is only one account owner. The other users must sign into...

Just filed my Federal tax return

Thanks donheff. I'm using Turbotax online version and didn't get the message you got. That would have saved me some frustration. Any way, I tried again at 11:30 EST and my data was there.

Just filed my Federal tax return

For future reference, where did you find that Vanguard's data would open to Turbotax today? I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why my data is not showing up in Turbotax even though Turbotax said it found my forms when I imported them.

    Vanguard - last straw?

I have been a Vanguard customer for 25+ years. I was a Fidelity customer before that. I have always been satisfied with Vanguard but I am a pretty low maintenance customer. I wanted to move DH's inheritance accounts from TDA and rollover a portion of my 401k into an IRA. After reading all of...

    LTC/medicaid/elder care attorney

Lots of good info in post #8. In 2017, I petitioned to become my mom's legal guardian, placed her in a memory care unit, and applied for Medicaid to pay for her care when her funds ran out. I used an attorney when I became her legal guardian. To complete the Medicaid application, I worked...

Poll:What type of insurance did you get for early retirement (HMO vs PPO)?

ACA policies where I live are either HMOs or EPOs. Unfortunately, there are no PPO policies offered. Our policy is an EPO which is very similar to an HMO.

Reimburse kids college - how to structure?

My parents couldn't afford to help me. It took 10 years to pay off my loans. So, it was important to me that we help our sons but also have some boundaries in place to get them to consider the cost/benefit of their decisions. We told our sons that we would pay the equivalent of in-state...

    Special Needs Trust

My advice is to use a lawyer specializing in SNT. Also, think beyond the establishment of the trust to who can/will perform trustee duties and where the funds will reside when you die and the SNT gets funded. When MIL passed away 18 months ago DH and his sister became trustees of their adult...

    ACA Rate Increases For 2022

My insurance broker pointed out to me that you have to read the details about out of network coverage carefully as each company handles them differently. Some provide no coverage out of network except for emergencies. Some provide coverage but have a separate deductible and max OOP for out of...

    No Cost HELOC??

We took out a HELOC on our primary residence a little over a year ago at a regional bank and paid no fees. However, we pay a $50 maintenance fee per year regardless if we draw funds on it or not. I'm under the impression that this is pretty typical. We told the bank that our plan was to use...

what paperwork needed to sell a home?

3 years ago, the seller and I used a title company to complete and file all the paperwork necessary for our real estate transaction. It was very easy and less costly than using a realtor and/or a lawyer.

Issues with Building a Home Without a Loan

We are thinking of building a home without financing. We have never built a home before. We plan to hire a builder and don't plan to do any of the work ourselves. We already own the land. I'm looking for input on what challenges or risks this may create. Will we have difficulties finding a...

Living in Two Places - Experiences, Factors and Issues?

We own 2 homes in WI and rent a 3rd in FL. a) What locations and what months? Why did you choose them as a pair. Mid-April through mid-December we split our time between our 2 homes in WI. We've owned both properties for 20+ years. The northern WI property was our cottage during our working...

    Asset based mortgage

2 years ago we got an asset based HELOC from a regional bank for 70% of the appraised value of our home. We were 57 years old and living off our taxable investments. We had to provide copies of all investment statements. I'm sure there was some formula they used but I don't know what it was.

Poll: Do you have a pension?

Corporate defined contribution plan. Haven't decided yet if I will roll the balance into an IRA or draw as non-cola pension in the future. I currently consider the balance as part of my Fixed Income portfolio earning interest at the 30 year treasury rate.
