Thirty-Six Years Today Stock Market Crash

I remember it well, was doing IT support at a large west coast bank for their personal trust business line. Everyone was freaking out and the Portfolio Managers were just trying to keep their clients calm. Thankfully the systems remained up and stable so IT could stay in the background. At the...

    Fasting for Health? Obstacles.

I tried IF and liked how I focused more on what and how much I was eating. But being hungry while fasting gave me acid reflux. After a few months it was really bad and I had to stop. It took a few more months for the reflux to subside. My body works better with regularly paced small meals, YMMV.

Fidelity HSA Transfers takes 20 days?

I did the exact Health Equity HSA to Fidelity transfer 6 months ago. HE only transfers cash so you will need to sell your positions before starting the process. If I recall correctly HE sends a physical check to Fidelity, it took about 3 weeks to complete. Much happier at Fidelity now.

Placed New IRA Account all in Money Market Funds

I am in a situation like yours having recently retired and rolled my (not roth) 401K to an IRA. The 401k was about 40% equities but all went to cash (4.5% MM) during the rollover. I am building a CD ladder with no maturities longer than 12 months, but am not yet looking at getting back in to...

    I Finally Retired !

Rollovers went smoothly. The 401K was at Fidelity so getting it rolled to an IRA was simple. Some of the funds in the 401k needed to be sold and the normal Fidelity process noted that could take a few days. Instead I sold them myself while still in the 401k and put the $$ in a Fidelity MM...

    I Finally Retired !

Thank You for all the responses. 5 weeks in to ER now and no regrets, should have done it earlier. I do not miss the work and BS at all, I do miss some of the people. Oddly I do miss the routine (it was all in-office) but then I realized that once I was at work I just wanted to leave. A...

    Used car title question

Personally I would stay away from salvage vehicles. They also may be difficult to insure depending on the insurance company and state. Also examine the title to see if is in the name of the person selling the car. "Curbstoning" is the practice of someone flipping cars without transferring the...

    I Finally Retired !

Hello (again) ! I finally did it. Been an e-r.org member since 2018 and read the site every day. Much to my embarrassment the only thread I ever started was this: https://www.early-retirement.org/forums/f26/joining-the-class-of-2019-a-95013.html Where I claimed to be joining the class of...

Time frame for receiving an inheritance question

Sorry for your loss. The successor trustee is now the owner of the assets that are named in the trust. You can treat them as your own property while honoring any limitations or specific instructions of the trust. There is no need to involve an attorney or the courts, all transactions are...

    COBOL for COVID?

This article brings up a lot of good points. While COBOL is an older language and uncool by today's standards, it is really not the cause of failing systems. In the mainframe world IBM continues to support and invest in COBOL and other higher level languages by enhancing the z/OS Language...

Vanguard Transition is too much trouble

We have Taxable and IRA mutual fund accounts with Vanguard and we see the transition link only for the IRA. Pushing further through the process with the IRA there was a message saying that if you have any auto investing setup in an account the transition link will not appear until you delete...

    Carvana

I have not bought a car from Carvana, but did purchase a used rental car 6 months ago. I shopped their site and they had vehicles I was interested in. It's very slick and for I understand why it would be popular with those who are not mechanically inclined or loathe car shopping. Being into...

Be careful who you talk finances with!

We had an EJ guy ring the doorbell a few years ago. Told him we managed our own affairs and when he tried to get details I simply told him ".... I could go into our financial details with a random stranger who rang the doorbell, but I am not going to ...". It was all very civil and pleasant...
