Advice on Making More $$ in a Trust Account

My mom sadly passed away in April 2023. She had created a trust that held all her property, including her bank accounts, and named me as Trustee. For years she drove me crazy by using the bank right next to her house for her checking and savings. They charged her outrageous monthly fees. I...

Fido is recommending Fixed Def'd Annuity ...

Hello-- I've been sitting on about $193K in cash in my traditional IRA at Fidelity for awhile (out of a total of $520K). At my recent check-in with Fidelity, it was suggested that I put that money to work now that interest rates are higher. The suggestion was to put $175K into a 3-year Fixed...

Anybody Rely Mostly on Dividend Funds? Questions

My sister gave her notice on Friday at the high-stress job she's held for 8 years. She's almost 62 and a widow. She still has a mortgage on her house and will continue to make payments on it, rather than robbing her retirement accounts to pay it off. She'll obviously need ACA for the next 3...

Will You Share What Funds You're In?

I've discovered over the past year, since retiring, that managing money is a LOT of work. It shouldn't be this stressful. I want to just get into 4 or 5 or 6 (or some reasonable, manageable number of) ETFs and/or mutual funds and then sit back and put our accounts on autopilot (with the normal...

Will the "Other Shoe" EVER Drop?

My DH and I went to mostly cash in our retirement accounts mid-2020. We're currently sitting on about $1M in money market funds. I also have a "play money" account with about $138K in it. Now we're trying to figure out when the heck to dive back into the market. At the start of this year...

    First Tax Return Since Retiring--OUCH!

Despite my username, I retired on 2/7/2020. Today I completed our first post-retirement tax return. Holy moly--writing that check to the gubmint is gonna HURT! I had time to do some daytrading this year, which was more successful than I realized, AND I did a backdoor Roth conversion in Dec...

    Anybody Use IBD's "Leaderboard"?

Just curious if anyone on this forum uses Investors Business Daily's "Leaderboard" application. It looks interesting, mostly because it takes some of the work out of my research/trading. If so, would you recommend it? TIA.

    Make It Stop!!!!!

Glad I retired a month ago so I can stay in bed today with the covers over my head ... Yes, I know—if your AA is right, you can relax, blah blah. Doesn’t mean this doesn’t SUCK ?

Now a Good Time to do Roth Conversion?

It was part of my financial plan to do a partial conversion from IRA to Roth in 2020. Is it a good time to do that Roth conversion *now*, while the market is down, instead of waiting until the end of the calendar year as had been planned? I have bunch of cash sitting in my IRA right now...

    Anyone Invest in Dimensional Funds?

Curious as to whether anyone here has their retirement money invested in Dimensional Funds. If so, is your experience good or bad? Are you happy with your returns? Satisfied with fees? TIA.

    Walk-in Tub?

Does anyone in this forum have a walk-in tub in their home? If so, what's your opinion of it? Thinking of putting one in to replace our standard tub when we update our bathroom. I wonder if it would affect the resale of our home, or increase or decrease the value, etc. They look like...

    Finally - it's real!

Hi -- I am ... just 10 working days away from retirement !!! FINALLY! I know it's been a long journey, and some here have been put off by the wide variety of questions I've posted, on wildly different topics--but we made it. ;D Given the astounding performance of the markets recently, we...

    Traveling to US Volunteer Opportunities?

Was just reading some old threads. Someone named nvestsly mentioned that he’d RVed around the country and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity along the way. I find this idea intriguing—sounds more appealing than just wandering around aimlessly. Anyone else do this? How do you plan...

Did Anyone Travel the US for a Few Months after Retiring?

I have traveled the US pretty extensively, but my spouse hasn't. So we'd like to travel around the country for, say, 6 months after we're both retired. What do people who've done this think is the best mode of travel if you want to make your own itinerary, just sort of gambol around, and stop...

    Anybody Familiar with this Method?

Has anyone read this book, or are you familiar with their work (Brett Owens & Tom Jacobs)?: How to Retire on Dividends: Earn a Safe 8%, Leave Your Principal Intact I guess the gist of it is investing in closed-end bond funds and REITs, etc. I just skimmed the portion they allow you to see on...

"Mr. Free at 33" - Anyone familiar?

Last night I stumbled across a blogger named "Mr. Free at 33". He FIREd at age 33 and lives off the income his investments generate. He had at the time of the articles I read a little over $400K in a basket of 125 dividend-producing stocks he calls his "FIRE Fund", which he lists here...

How On Earth Do I Go About Finding a Fiduciary?

I feel in desperate need of a straight-talking fiduciary financial advisor. I'd prefer someone local to me, so I can go in, sit down, and have a good chat, write notes, ask lots of questions, pose lots of what-ifs, etc. How on earth do I go about finding one? I just googled "fiduciary...

    Generating Passive Income Thru Dividends

I know this is probably a dumb question--but it's a serious one, so please just humor me with your responses. I haven't retired yet, but almost. I have $315K in one IRA and $140K in a 401k. I'd like to have the IRA generate a passive income of $10k-$12k/year. Is it possible to generate...

    Advice for Widow re: Mortgage/Taxes/IRA

Hi. My widowed sister, age 60, has $120K left to pay on her mortgage. Luckily, many years ago she bought stock in a company a friend started, inside of an IRA. That stock split, grew, split, grew, etc--and now she has enough to pay off her mortgage in that account. I'm a huge advocate of...

Anyone Here Start on Online Business?

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger, and part of the reason I want to do it is so I can focus more on possibly starting my own online business. Back in 2005, I had a thriving jewelry-making business going. Someone asked me to make matching "chokers" for themselves and their dog--and an idea...

Best Way to Learn Options Trading?

Any thoughts on the best way to teach myself how to play with stock options? Thinking I may like to dabble a little and see if I can get the hang of it, once I have more free time. DH just ordered a CD from some guy we saw on TV that supposedly is a wizard at it. How did YOU learn?

I'm Ready to PULL THAT TRIGGER ... (I think!)

I introduced myself several months ago. But today I'm here to say, I'm trying to gather the courage to pull the trigger and tell the manager I'm gonna RETIRE at end of August--4 weeks away!!! I turn 61 on Sunday. DH and I still have "only" $800K in our IRAs combined. Neither of us will get a...

What To Do When FDIC-Insured Acct Exceeds $250K?

I got a notice from Fidelity today about exceeding the amount of FDIC insurance on my brokerage account, which hadn't even occurred to me, so I'm glad they did that. What do you do in this case? Just open another account somewhere and move some money into it? Hubby is in the same boat.
