    Medicare-Medigap Preparation Question

I'm going with either Aetna or Cigna Plan N in Ohio this July. For those of you with Plan N experience, how exactly does the whole process work once I have the coverage? Assume a scenario where I use a doctor or lab and I've exceeded the deductible amount on the first visit; I also assume that...

    529 too late?

My dependent granddaughter, a high school senior, has decided she would like to go to community college or trade school next year. We had not put anything away for this. Is it too late to start a 529 account for her to go? Is there any significant tax benefit to starting one this late in the...

    Medicare-ACA advice

I'll be 65 in July 2024. DW will be 65 in June 2025. Both retired. We are currently in an ACA Silver Plan (Ohio), HSA eligible (high deductible), and get about 50% subsidy for our premiums (which are high). I plan to sign up for this plan again later this year. Any advice, thoughts or strategy...

    End of Life Planning

I hope this topic isn't a bummer, but I need some comments on this. Both my DW and I want to be cremated when that time comes. Since I have never done any serious planning for our personal "end of days", I made an appointment at our local, small town funeral home in Northeast Ohio. To say I was...

    ACA Change Notice

I couldn't find the answer to these on the other threads, so I'll start a new one. I received the attached in an email a couple of days ago. However, when I go into the website and try to renew my application, I get an error message saying that I already have an application for this year...

    Employer 401k Change

I FIREd about 18 months ago. I retained my employer 401k and make monthly withdrawals. I am very happy with my portfolio mix and what the manager (Fidelity) offers. I just received a notice that my company will be changing the stable value fund option from Mellon Stable Value Fund, to Putnam...

    Irscalculators.com

Has anyone tried the tax estimator at irscalculators.com? I am trying to plan withdrawals for this year and next, and was interested in your experience with the tool. Did you find it was accurate?

    HSA Question

My current plan is HSA eligible. I am allowed to contribute $7K (2019) plus “$1K catch up”-whatever that means. I will be switching from this current plan (my former employer COBRA) to the ACA. Are HSA contribution limits the same for all HSA-eligible plans?

    Max HSA contributions

I'm 60. According to my Fidelity website, I can contribute $7K (family) to my HSA account this year. There is also a footnote that says I can contribute a "catch-up(?) amount of $1K. So I can make a total contribution of $8K this year. Correct? Also, is the entire amount deductible on my tax return?

    COBRA and Open Enrollment

FIRE'd in Ohio this year. Opted to use the 18 months of COBRA until mid-2020, then roll the dice with the Marketplace. Question: Does anyone know if I will have to do anything during the "open enrollment" window (usually in Sept/Oct) as I did when I was working? I've not heard anything from...

    ACA options in TN

I read though the other TN threads, and didn't see an answer to this: How would you rate the ACA marketplace compared to other states? I compared TN to OH on Healthsherpa, and it seemed much more expensive. Looking for a Tenneseean to confirm or correct that impression. If you are a couple...

ISO advice on retiring in Tenessee

I have finally decided to go FIRE in January! We are having discussions about selling our Ohio home and relocating to Tenessee. Taxes and COL seem to be lower there, and the weather is way better. Sick of snow. Looking at Johnstown and Knoxville areas. Any experiences, cautions, pros/cons...

    SS on 401k withdrawals?

I can't find this an answer to this so I'll ask: If I retire at 59 1/2, I can take distributions from my 401k without the penalty. I understand I will need to pay income tax. But, will I have to pay into SS until I reach retirement age on those withdrawals? If so, how much? ???

    Getting close

I'm 59. My ESOP/401K is well funded. Health care options cause uncertainty. That's the main reason I joined - teach me how I can make the jump!
