80% hit by the airport "random selection"

It could be how you act when you are in line. Years ago while traveling with my young adult son I told him when in the TSA line to not look at any agents in the eye, to act like he travels all of the time, act bored and rushed. Of course, he looks all around him, acts nervous and unsure. Of...

    Death of a spouse...and a different story...

I read a newspaper article many years ago from some expert (counselor or psychologist) addressing remarriage. It seems counterintuitive to many but the expert stated that widows and widowers that had great marriages usually quickly remarried. People in bad marriages were the ones that were...

anyone buy a new washer/dryer recently?

We purchased a Speed Queen top loader and dryer in 2022. This is our second set as we left our previous ones in the house we sold in 2020. We have been pleased with them.

Johnson & Johnson new logo because people can't read

The ability to read historical documents and letters from family members will be lost. Of course, what is taught in school has always changed through the generations. A friend showed me a book he had that contained letters from, and to, soldiers during the Civil War. Many of the letters were...

Delta Sky Miles Changes: How long will Ed Bastian last?

I abandoned chasing points a long time ago since the last two companies I worked at implemented travel policies that required selecting the cheapest fare and I could never amass enough points with any particular airline to be of any real value. And, my business travel the last 10 years...

    College Costs, why?

John Stossel had several segments about the rising cost of tuition. His perspective is that the federal government pouring more and more money into universities allowed them to go on a spending spree. Here is one of Stossel's videos:

Vanguard Brokerage acct -> 1099 when?

A few years ago after I filed my tax return I received a revised 1099 from Vanguard. A couple weeks later I received yet another revised 1099. Since then I wait until the end of February to start my tax return.

My son wants to me to help pay for his very expensive wedding? How much?

There is plenty of evidence that the success of a marriage is inversely tied to the cost of the wedding. Here is just one link: https://20somethingfinance.com/wedding-expenses-and-marriage-success/

Moving on from Vanguard Personal Advisor Services

I managed my Vanguard accounts while I was in the accumulation phase. About two years before I retired I signed up with PAS and it has been beneficial for their advice.Vanguard told me that I did a very good job managing my accounts on my own. Preparing for retirement created new questions and...

"Hold my beer and watch this" (The Darwin Thread)

Reading this thread made me reminisce about all the stupid things I did with fireworks, gunpowder, aerosol cans, etc. I now have to reconsider being upset with my grandkids that stay on their electronic devices all day during the summer.

Meet the dog who learned to walk like a human.

A friend calls three-legged dogs "mathematical dogs". You know, put down 3 and carry the one.

    Generation Jones Corner

I was born in '58 and remember as a child that my age was not included in the Baby Boomer period. I suppose sociologists expanded the age range through the years. I do remember being called the Me Generation, mostly by advertisers. But, not a good moniker as it implied being self absorbed...

Poll: Market bottom and recovery time?

Ben Carlson had a good analysis about the US stock market during times of war and other fateful events: https://awealthofcommonsense.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=119792921d353d5c31ea3b6a5&id=5e2fd5fe1d&e=7cc2c934ce

How hard is it to install cabinets?

It appears that using French Cleats for mounting upper cabinets is becoming popular and is a good option for a DIY'r. It may be similar to what others posted about IKEA, but I did not investigate.

Do you have a back splash in your kitchen?

Back Splash Wars Coincidentally, today I seen the following posted on a FB group, for a community where I moved from last year. It sure started a heated debate. This is from a realtor: This might be an unpopular opinion here in PT as I see this a lot, but I implore you to stop doing this in...

    A Tacky Christmas Card?

We send out around 200 cards so we use preprinted labels. My DW writes a personal note and signs the cards. Not having to write each address and checking them twice saves a lot of valuable time during the season. Anyone too snooty about it just needs to let me know and they will be removed for...

    Stripped Screw Head Removal

I have used this same exact set a few times with good success. They will not work in every situation but I have had better luck with them than with several other stripped head extractors. As others have stated make sure you drill/screw them counterclockwise (left).

    First management position, any advice?

I was in IT management for half of my career. You have received very good advice from this forum. I might add, you will have moments during your first few months when it will seem that you have to be a mom to your team with sibling conflicts. But, tell them that you want to treat them as adults...

Retire where your kids will want to visit you?

When I worked we lived apart from our two sons and their families. For retirement we moved close to our oldest son and on a lake. His family sees us once or twice weekly. Our youngest son is 5 hours away and is only able to visit a few times a year and then they are short stays due to too many...

    How do strangers see you?

I learned to play dumb when I was young. It got me out of some unwanted advances from girls and it amazed me what people will reveal when they thought I had no sense.

    Finally Retired

I finally retired on February 5. I put in to be in the 2020 class, but missed it by a couple months. I had planned to retire in April 2020 but due to Covid, working from home and a pending company merger I decided to hold off. We closed on a lake home in Indiana last March, closed on our house...

Which American Accent Do You Have?

Northern for me. I am a bit surprised because in the north there are many different accents. My Hoosier accent is a lot different than people from Detroit or Cleveland. I also spent 27 years near Pittsburgh and native Pittsburghers have a very distinctive accent. We call them Yinzers.

    Goodbye Spa tub & shower

I was in a local Habit for Humanity store a couple months ago to donate some items and seen they had about a dozen Jacuzzi type tubs. I suspect no one wants them anymore. Our "new to us" house has one and I suspect it will go to the trash heap whenever we decide to remodel.
