    Travel right now: FAIR WARNING!

What a nightmare! And rental cars are extremely expensive too. I lucked out on a recent trip to Chicago and am thankful.

Be Wary of Rehabilitation Facilities in Skilled Nursing Homes

Wow, all these rules, as I'm finding out. I'm sure they do serve a purpose but present tough problems too.

    Supportive Living in Chicago

It's like assisted living but you are more independent, for people on Medicaid I think. I wish she/we could pay for a year or two. I have heard that those places tend to be better. And thanks all, I did get a list.

Be Wary of Rehabilitation Facilities in Skilled Nursing Homes

What is the 21-day rule? (I'm going through a learning process for all this for a family member.) Thanks.

    Supportive Living in Chicago

Just one brother in Chicago, and her doctors etc. feels she has to get her medical problems stabilized before she is moved. And like you say the process is daunting to move from state to state but she will come to CA, if we can find a suitable one. I'm glad it worked out for your family. Was...

    Supportive Living in Chicago

I am placing a sister in "supportive living" in the Western Suburbs of Chicago so have to choose the right place, as she really cannot. She's on SSDI and Medicaid, so I would like to read some reliable reviews for such places in Western Suburbs area of Chicago. Any ideas on where I can find...

Can I Age In Place With Stairs?

I think the bar looks unstable, but that's me. Another problem with stairs is that if you have high blood pressure, you can lose consciousness by going up stairs too quickly. Happened to my mother and aunt. Sadly, my aunt passed away from the fall.

Do you allocate $$ for troubled relatives in your firecalc?

That's how I feel too. I only give to two siblings who are both somewhat disabled, mentally or physically. When covid hit, I reached out to one who is doing his best and who got laid off. I sure don't expect it back. But long term support, no, can't afford it. And loans just poison the...

    How Many Funds?

I think I will hold on for now, just add one ETF from the recommendations here. I have big funds with varied holdings, so I am not worried. I will meet with my non-Fidelity advisor when he opens up after covid. And no I'm not a big trader, lol. I pay those fees to let the managers worry!

I made an appointment for reallocation of my portfolio.

With all this new money being Spent / Printed impact SS and Medicare in the future?

I was panicked about inflation too but then I read an analyst's opinion that printing money only to "fill up the hole" will not wreck the economy, but if they keep doing it after they fill the hole...look out. But yes, all nations go broke at some point. They recover too.

    How Many Funds?

Thanks to all for your advice and recommendations. They did want me to split the money into 24 funds--I think no one fund had more than 10% of my portfolio! I went in for a reallocation, not really management. So I think I will diversify a bit, maybe add a bond fund, although I don't see why...

    How Many Funds?

I have saved about low six figures, and checked with Fidelity to see how they would reallocate my ~six funds. I am doing well with the funds. They gave me about 24 funds! This just seems like too many for me to manage. Is this a typical number?

...and I thought I was ready

Retire! I was in the same position, but single with lower income. I retired the minute I could retain my med insurance and get a pension. I have had to supplement with a p/t job every once in a while, but I love the job and it's good to get out. Always been a creative and now I'm living the life...

Whats the most wacky or crazy job you have held?

My first job: telemarketing furnaces in August. In the Midwest! Got fired after I called my boss and said I wouldn't be in because it was my uncle's birthday party, lol. I learned that bosses really do expect you to show up every day, even if the customers give you a hard time, or you miss a...

What is PF?? And I can't find a list of all these terms. Does it exist somewhere? TIA

    Intermittent Fasting, Yes it Works

I do IF. I eat from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be interesting to see my blood work next month, but I really do feel better. As my doctor says, our bodies are designed to deal better with starvation than over feeding. The fasting sets off healing hormones, etc. A friend who goes to the same...

    frugal work clothes

Yes, definitely start out at Goodwill. They are filled with biz casual. Some cities have charities that provide office clothes for folks starting out, like you. And WalMart has polo shirts used for school uniforms for about $5, if you are small enough. Then after a few paychecks you can go on to...

Value of pension and net worth

I was told pension value would be roughly whatever amount times 4% gives you your yearly benefit. So $37200 divided by .04 is $930,000. Of course it's not really an asset but it gives you an idea of the assets it's replacing. (No guarantees on my math, lol)

Is This A Magical Cure For Calf Cramps?

Mine are positional too. I think it's because when I sleep, my low back goes into more of an arch, which stretches the nerves across the hips, and then I get the cramps. So I do what you do, or I sleep with a little rolled up towel under my back above my waist to flatten out the curve a little.

Poll:Those who follow a LCHF (Low Carb High Fiber) Diet, What do you eat?

I have been eating low carb for ten years. My labs have gotten so good I'm going off statins at the next exam if the numbers continue. Also, my bone density is getting better, to where I'm no longer in osteoporosis. Of course as I get older, I gain weight easier so I do intermittent fasting...

What is the best Alternative to Quicken after 2020 (Non Subscription)

"an inactive subscription only disables online features not local ones" Good to know. I use 2001 and manually enter banking data. I use Quicken to reconcile my checking account, so hopefully that will stay. I would update but I think it's difficult with that old of a version and I want to...
