    Military retirement

Nords, Thanks for the in depth reply. I do truly appreciate the time for comments. I don't get on here much but just wanted to update on where I stand. Currently 807 days from terminal leave. I have hit my first 1M :) AFTER TAX! and still have about 180K left to save from pay. So I figure $1.2M...

    Military retirement

Thanks for the responses. I somehow keep forgetting about the VA disability benefits. I might get some percentage for carpal tunnel in both hands and back issues. No where near 50% but any amount helps. I don't count SS in my plans, but I do try to use a small COLA estimate of 1.2%. I stay...

    Military retirement

I know there are several other retired military on this site so I am asking for some advice on planning for that. I am about 30 months from starting my terminal leave ...and don't want to work after, unless I just get bored. My mil retirement should be ~55k before tax. Currently I save...

    Best tax estimate sites?

Very much appreciated. Looks in-depth so I'll take some time to play around with these.

    Best tax estimate sites?

I'm looking to find a good site that includes the NIIT paid on top of capital gains. I just found out about this tax this week and it put a major dent in my plans so I need to go back and readjust. IRS website only shows this as additional medicare tax. Based on my situation and depending on...

    Tax exempt funds?

I think I like this option. I'll have to go back and have a look.

    Tax exempt funds?

I'm looking to put some extra cash into mutual funds that are listed at tax-exempt. Not trying to add to my tax bill. My question is do the dividends get reported to the IRS, maybe as qualified divs?

    Birding

Have been avid bird watcher since I was 5. Went back to school to study wildlife sciences and took as many ornithology courses as I could. Once I get to fully retire I plan on visiting many of the hotspots. Living in south Texas, I have been able to add a few to the life list. Also was able to...

    AA finally in place

I was thinking adjusting after the new year. I like to see if things go good during Christmas. Did me well on straight stock picks, but too much hair loss:facepalm:.

    AA finally in place

This was all on USAA. Which got me thinking about other brokerages, and finding this forum!

    AA finally in place

So the transfer from USAA to Schwab is now complete. As of yesterday my AA is in place. I was going to wait until the first of June but like a kid in a candy store I wanted to rush the wait. I stuck with CS funds except VTAB which I picked up at USAA since there was no like fund at CS. Time to...

    Military retirees?

Not that I am counting down, but I plan to be on terminal in 48 mos, 2 wks, 3 days. I hope and am interested in others. I plan to make more in retirement off pension than I do now. Only because I live well below the means now ~36K p/year and retired pay is well above that annually.

SS may be depleted by 2029 due to virus economy

Nothing I do related to retirement planning involves SS in any form or fashion. If it still around when I am eligible to apply, great. If not, no loss in my plans.

    ER and IRA contributions

It was what I was looking for.

    ER and IRA contributions

I admit that since I was planning on retiring early many years ago I left my Roth IRA almost abandoned. I have contributed only 4-5 years since opening it back in 2005. Needless to say my past year low/high are only 24K-32K. I had planned on needing the money at ER so I didn't contribute. Fast...

Airlines - Which Survive Without Going Through Bankruptcy

flightaware.com, looks like plenty of flying going on. May be less passenger and more cargo. I didn't go into details.

    Thoughts on Vanguard

Excellent advice! I had not thought of that. Thanks! Always open to different strategies! I will keep this in mind for sure.

    Thoughts on Vanguard

Thanks for the heads up. Since the fee at USAA is a bit less, I'll buy and let the transfer do its thing. This brings up another question, maybe a new thread. Would it be worth saving the commission fee and going with ETF? I have only briefly looked at the differences and long term "seems" to...

    AMZN question......

I bought FB IPO, then being younger and inexperienced sold during the very quick downturn . However a few years later I did get AMZN at 1K sold once it doubled and never looked back!

    Thoughts on Vanguard

I have had all week to do some comparisons with VG and Schwab. I am trying to keep things simple so I am looking at the 4-fund portfolio. Leaving out VG Total International Bond, the other three bonds are basically identical between VG/Schwab. Question now is, is there anything close to VTABX...

    Estimated taxes

Thanks. Makes sense. I'm probably just going to pay up-front because everything came from stock gains. If I pay now then I'll be able to keep from tempting myself to buy individual stocks again. I'm still waiting on the USAA/Schwab before I can setup my long term plan. Only have a few weeks left...

    Estimated taxes

I'm not following what you say. Since I am still working I have payroll tax. I only need to add the 12.4, which I'm bumping to 13K. If it were all made in the first two quarters your saying I can still split that up over the rest of the year and not be penalized as long as I at beat my 2019...

    Estimated taxes

OK, I should be good as long as I pay by 15 July. I use freetaxusa.com and have never had any issues, plus it is free and I don't have to worry about state taxes

    Estimated taxes

So this is something I'll need to do since all my gains were in the 1st & 2nd quarters? Really just March and April. But after I don't plan to have much besides dividends from savings accounts which will be very little.
