Restaurant adding fee for use of credit card

I believe that most restaurants that prefer cash or only accept cash are cheating on their taxes and/or laundering money.

401k "rule of 55" and going back to work for same employer questions

Thanks. If I go back to work for them part-time I wouldn’t need any more withdrawals until after age 59.5.

401k "rule of 55" and going back to work for same employer questions

Thanks. I didn’t think about looking for a form to pay the potential penalties. IRS topic 558 says it’s exempt. I’ll stop worrying about the what-ifs. Distributions made to you after you separated from service with your employer after attainment of age 55.

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

We took our first trip to UK in February and used Visa credit cards with no foreign fees. Most of our cards qualified but not all so check the fine print. I drew 100 pounds from a bank ATM that was in our credit union's network and there was no fee for that either- although it took a real...

401k "rule of 55" and going back to work for same employer questions

I retired at the end of 2023 at age 58-1/2. I took some money out of my (former) government employer sponsored pre-tax 401k using the so-called "rule of 55". Now I have an opportunity to do some part-time work for the same former employer which is appealing- it's the work I always loved before...

    Blow that Dough 2024

How much dough we all have varies. I’m newly retired. Due to some issues with kids still on college financial aid we are planning to draw the bare minimum from our 401k for the next two years. I was trying to decide which gas grill would complete my outdoor kitchen. It was down to the Weber...

Diaries, Journals, Logs - do you keep them, and why and how?

This thread is on-point for me. I’m 3 months into retirement. The first 2-1/2 were pretty simple as we were mostly traveling. Now I’m trying to figure it out- fitting into my wife’s world and being productive around the house but also hitting some goals of exercising, learning new skills, and...

Hi, I am 57 thinking of retiring next year.

I think I listed up-thread but I have a pension with healthcare continuance. My net monthly pension is 80+% of my working net paycheck. We draw from 401k for the difference. It’s all taxable income which makes tax decisions fairly simple.

Hi, I am 57 thinking of retiring next year.

10 weeks into retirement update. I don’t know what retirement is yet. We have mostly been traveling. First week my kids were in town so it was just an extended holiday break. Second week went to stay with my dad about 4 hours away. Third-fourth weeks helped son pack for 6 months studying...

Laguna Woods Village, CA or Leisure World (Seal Beach) Anyone?

8 sets of my relatives live or have lived in Seal Beach Leisure World over the past 40 years. It’s great for a home base if you travel a lot. I’d never consider living there full time because I want more variety in my neighborhood. The lack of walkable retail is a definite downside. Upside...

Hi, I am 57 thinking of retiring next year.

Two weeks in and I definitely don’t miss the job. So far I have: Spent time with my kids home from college. Went on a bike ride, several hikes, and some boulder climbing. Visited my dad and helped him mount some Model T tires. Busy getting house ready for us to be gone most of February and...

    2023 Investment Performance Thread

Early this year I rebalanced to 60% equities- mostly index funds- and put 40% into CD's. The equities are up 25% for the year. I'm happy with the outcome.- retired today. I wasn't comfortable with my previous asset allocation because it was all exposed to market risk. By shifting to CD's I...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Turned in my work phone, computer, and id badge. Picked up my final paycheck. Walked out the door RETIRED!

Hi, I am 57 thinking of retiring next year.

I’m officially RETIRED! Dropped off my ID badge and picked up my final check at noon. Holy crap now what?

Hi, I am 57 thinking of retiring next year.

14 work days left! It’s getting real! A bunch of surprises since I gave notice but they will be easier to deal with retired than still working. (Possibly needing to spend time helping family in 3 states)

    Work for toys/travel

I'm not worried. We have budgeted a 20% increase over current expenditures plus inflation and an emergency fund. Based on our standard of living this will more than double our "play" money. Everybody is obviously different. We will have well above median annual spending of US retirees but a...

    Work for toys/travel

I’m definitely ready to retire from the everyday job. Part of the timing is all the trips that are planned from February through September. I wouldn’t go back until October at the earliest. That should give me time to settle into a routine first.

    Work for toys/travel

Here I am with 6 weeks to retirement and suddenly I'm considering work? Summary of the question: I'm considering some part-time work to pay for frivolous toys and travel. If you've done this, does it make the work more palatable than the old slog just to keep a roof over head? A week after...

Hi, I am 57 thinking of retiring next year.

Submitted my separation form to HR this week and the pension application today. 28 work days to go! There are some unknowns regarding tax withholding from pension and 401k withdrawals. We did our best on the W-4P and W-4R. Will revisit and adjust as needed after the first few months. We...

Best day and time to sell and buy index funds?

Thanks. Like I said if it was easy the billionaires would have made it hard for us paupers anyhow. I'll try to sell the one group of funds and buy the other at nearly the same time- probably close of business on Wednesdays.
