    New Zealand?

Paul Theroux wasn't exactly thrilled with it. From page 22 of his book "The Happy Isles Of Oceania". "The next day I went to Christchurch, on the South Island. It looked prim and moribund, like the sort of South London suburb I had mocked in England on Sunday outings with the kids, driving...

Nonfat milk linked to prostate cancer

For those concerned, they may want to go to Dr. Andrew Weil's site, and do a search on soy. He has his own ideas. The way I look at it, nutrition is still in it's infancy, and there's many more studies yet to come. No guarantees for anything one eats or drinks.

Nonfat milk linked to prostate cancer

Good thing I switched to low fat, unsweetened soy drink for my breakfast cereal a few years ago.

    New Zealand?

I lived and worked in the South Island of New Zealand for four months (their winter) way back in 1970. It's a beautiful country, but after the four months I was glad to leave. If you're an outdoors person, who loves hiking, camping, fishing, mountaineering, etc., then NZ is probably one of the...

Anyone have one of these? ASUS EEE PC

I don't blame you. A few blogs are saying it, but I've seen nothing in any of the Asus sites. In a few months we'll know one way or another. If it does get released, whether it will hit the right price point, now that's another story. By that time, there may be other competitors out there...

Seeking walkable neighborhood anywhere? Good study.

I'm surprised. The above site works for Canada too. My area only got 20 out of 100. Anyhow, I gave up walking outside a couple of years ago. I wasn't sure what was going to do me in first, the cars or the dogs. Now, I do mall walking, Monday thru Friday for about forty minutes, and think...

What is more important to you, taste or nutrition?

Pavo, Aren't there a few fats that are good for you and your body may need for nourishment, or are you on a special diet? I'm thinking about certain oils like canola and/or olive, a variety of nuts, and fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackeral) etc.

Is anyone tempted to do some "market timing"

I'm in Canada, but I just bought some more units to add to my U.S. index fund a few minutes ago. I'm more interested in re-balancing my portfolio holdings, rather than trying to market time.

    What's your favorite breakfast cereal?

Hot - Steel-cut oats with blueberries, cinnamon, ground flax, and a mix of black and white sesame, chia, and hemp seeds. Cold - Nature's Path Flax Plus, with added almonds, raisins, cinnamon, ground flax and the above seed mixture, topped by a cup of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries...

Anyone have one of these? ASUS EEE PC

Asus plans to make an announcement about their next generation EeePC on January 7 2008. Rumours are, they may announce an 8.9 screen. Don't get your hopes up. Rumours had spread around a few weeks ago that they were going to bring out a 10 inch screen model, that was until Asus officially...

Flat panel HDTV is now a "necessity"

Good question. Perhaps there's nothing left to upgrade to in my old home theatre system. The CRT TV I'm using was bought used over 24 years years ago, but still gives a decent colour rendition. The lowest priced 42 inch 720P replacement for it would cost about $750, and Soyo is not one of the...

Anyone have one of these? ASUS EEE PC

I've been following the reports on the Asus Eee since early last summer. Since it's release the reviews seem to have been mostly positive. If they bring out a bit bigger screen than 7 inches, I may consider buying one myself.

Flat panel HDTV is now a "necessity"

Since I can't convert, in that case, if I pursue HDTV, I may only run the audio portion through my receiver using a coaxial or optical cable. Thanks for the replies.

Flat panel HDTV is now a "necessity"

I have a five year old multi-channel receiver which I would like to use in an HDTV setup. Trouble is, it only has an S Video connection. Does anyone know if there's any way of converting an S Video connection to HDMI?

Eliminating Meat, Substituting Fish & Seafood

Just an update on this. First of all I'd like to thank everyone's response. It's good to know that quite a few of you are looking after your health, and that includes the choices of what to eat, and what not to. I received the results of my echocardiogram a couple of days ago, and the doctor...

Eliminating Meat, Substituting Fish & Seafood

Ziggy, You got that one right. With my last annual checkup, the electrocardiogram results don't look great, the stethoscope detects a slight heart murmer that wasn't there before. Some time soon, I have to get an echocardiogram check. I'm lucky that I like fish and seafood so that's not a...

Eliminating Meat, Substituting Fish & Seafood

I enjoy eating whole grains and I'm adding more vegetables to my diet, which was never that great to begin with. What I want to know is, has anyone here ever dropped meat altogether from their diet, and switched to fish and seafood instead? Did you stick to it over the long term, or did you get...

    Australia, anyone?

It doesn't seem all that long ago the Australian government used to pay (bribe) you to immigrate there. When I was ready to immigrate in the mid 70's, they slammed the door in my face. The guy at the consulate said they were only allowing bricklayers and nurses in. Since I didn't fit either...

Get Out of Stocks and Into Index MF's?

I've been busy the last week, "buying" Canadian stocks. The last time I was this happy about buying, was in the spring of 2006. The way I look at it, the more the market goes down, the more dividend yield I get. Dividend growth and yield, are my first priority. Long term capital gains are...

Decided to bail four years early

It's sort of weird how retirement seemed to come rushing up to me. I always wanted to retire early, but on my own terms. However, it didn't seem to work out that way. It never seems to be one factor that gives a person the final push out, but a whole host of them over the years. If someone...
