    Perspective

I haven't been keeping up with the forums as much, and I didn't know you took a new job and moved to CO. Glad to hear things are going well for you. Apart from the work-related stuff, how has the adjustment to CO been for you and your family?

Greater LBYM inspired by falling market?

No changes here. We generally follow a LBYM lifestyle, and that continues. Stuck with our plans for our annual family vacation. If we weren't already doing the LBYM thing, now would be (another) wake-up call to start, however.

How are people handling the recent down market?

Taking the opportunity to do some re-balancing, and speeding up some planned 529 contributions. But otherwise, mostly sitting tight.

Quite the opposite for me -- I have increased my supply of ammo recently.

    Pensioners bent over in RI

"professional civil servants" = fail "strong administrative skills" = fail "who stayed for the long term" = check "loyal to the system" = check "above any particular loyalty to ... those outside government" (i.e. those for whom they ostensibly work and who pay their salaries) = check "a...

If you (& spouse) made $160K/yr, would you force your kids to wear 2nd hand clothes?

I come from a family of 4 kids. Look back through our old family photos, and you'll see the same sweatshirts pass down from my older sister, to me, to my younger brother, and (if it held up to serving two 10 year old boys) my younger sister. Not ALL of our clothes were used; we each got some...

How much would it cost annually to live simply in Middlesex County (Central) New Jers

New Jersey is not the place to go to look for "reasonable" cost of living. It's one of the worst places you can go. Not only is it crowded (highest population density in the U.S.) and expensive, with high taxes, but looking at "average" stats for NJ aren't as helpful as they are in other...

    Sell before you are underwater.

Just got a pile of cash; should I pay off student loans?

I would pay them off. I paid off my student loans early even though the interest rate was much lower than yours. There's an intangible benefit to being debt-free, at least to me.

Social Security Stops Mailing Annual Statements

Social Security won't mail annual statements- MSN Money I guess it might take the Brain Trust over at the Social Security Administration a few more decades to consider how they could send these statements out via email or otherwise make them available online at a fraction of the $70 million...

The old question... to save or pay off debt

Pay off the debt. Not only is it the best move from a numbers perspective (you're not going to find a guaranteed "rate of return" that will match your credit card interest rate) but it also rewards you with much less stress and worry. Not only does it feel good to get that debt off your back...

    which job would you choose

I would choose Option 1 if I were really and truly convinced that no more than 40 hours per week would be required (I am skeptical though). If you really could work 8 hours/day M-F, having a fast-paced environment would IMO just make the day go by faster, and reduce the chances you'll get...

Our current income, net worth, and portfolio - comments?

Looks like you're doing great. I don't think it's necessarily an "improvement" but one thing you might want to consider is how well you did at re-balancing your portfolio during the past few years of market volatility. I know that I'm OK when it comes to not touching my investments based on...

529 plans vs. taxable savings (NYS)

I'm in the same boat as you -- well, a similar boat, just a few years ahead of you down the river ... We started a 529 (NY as well) for our first child in the year he was born, and maxed out the 10K contributions to it for the first 3 years of his life. When kid #2 came around, we opened one...

Have you got all your 1099's yet?

I tried kicking off TurboTax the other day, and Vanguard had not yet released the tax documents for some of my accounts ... I didn't have time to look into whether that was true or only a temporary glitch with the TurboTax software, but I was surprised.

    Now what?

It's never taken me longer than 4 months to find a job either, but I've never lost a job during such a terrible economic crisis. So I'd say beef up the emergency fund to 12 months. Other than that, sounds like you're doing great so I second what everyone else said about chasing the girls in a...

To buy a house, or not to buy a house

Heck yeah -- the FIREd are the ideal group that fits that category. But it doesn't fit the bill for most Young Dreamers. ;)

To buy a house, or not to buy a house

I think the answer is highly dependent on a myriad of facts we don't know about your personal situation (family situation, career stability, age, chances of wanting to move in the next 10 years, FIRE goals, savings/investments etc.). For certain people, buying a house now probably makes sense...

    Career Reflections

We're about the same age. I'm at gig #5 now, although I made a career change for this one. Wouldn't be surprised if I end up at gig #6 before long. So, no -- for our generation, I don't think you're atypical. Sorry to hear things are getting ugly at w*rk; hope you find something better soon.
