Best money advice you've ever received?

No. People that work too hard don't have time to make money. I see it all the time in my company. When I talk with people about stocks, they tell me thay don't have time for this. They just put their money in CD. When you work hard and get promoted, the salary doesn't go up much. I decided...

    Where were you at 31?

I only started keeping a record of my NW in Feb 04 when I was few months older than 31. At that time we had 150K in stocks and around 100K in house equity. Today at age 35 we have about 1 million in stocks and no house. Great advice from Grizz. Try to use your after office hours to increase...

More debt than anybody can handle!!!

I am not an expert on this issue as I don't live in the US, but I agree that taxes won't solve this problem. My estimation is that governments all over the world will have to increase the retirement / SS age. Even increasing the age by "just" 2-3 years will almost solve the problem. In 1889...

More debt than anybody can handle!!!

The US is not in such a bad shape IMO. Specially if you remember that it gets the best interest rates in the world. Saying that, it is nice to live in a place that actually runs budget surplus.

Which one or both? Retirement and/or Financial Indepedence

My father is a musician and teaches singing. Last year he was very ill and needed a lung transplant. He was barely breathing, but still he continued working. Sitting on a wheelchair, connected to oxygen, he was still teaching 3-4 hours a week. Not much, but he can't live without music. If you...

    Ouch!

I invest in very undervalued stocks. Usually micro caps that trade below net asset value or with very low price / sales ratio or very low price / earning ratio. Now I am mostly holding real estate companies in Hong Kong that trade well below NAV. I also have some industrial stocks that trade...

    Ouch!

The hang seng was down about 1300 points at some point :o But it closed only -285. Really crazy day. My portfolio was down about 5% today and about 20% since it picked last month. I am still up about 50% YTD so I guess I have nothing to complain about.

    Moolah

Well said. Also focus and devotion are important. I think all the successful people took some (calculated) risks, stayed very focused on the target and were very devoted reaching this target

FIRE is the destination but the way there may be different for each one. For me, I knew after a few months in my job that I won't be able to get high salary. Today I earn 65K being a programmer, and my net worth is probably well above most of the people in my company that earn more than me. We...

    Market Opinions.

I lost about 10% from the peak. Just love these opportunities, and I bought more cheap RE stocks in HK that trade below 1/3 of NAT. Who the hell is so stupid to sell 1 dollar for 30 cents

People Who Should Retire But Don't

Actually he had a stroke more than 10 years ago, so he stays at home since. They never had a financial problems. Her grandfather was a RE tycoon in HK. She always got dividends from the family company. About two years ago they sold all the assets and split the money between the family members...

    Market Opinions.

The HK market dropped much more than 2% today (and I dropped 4%). In my opinion, the stock markets in HK and the US both look reasonably priced. It doesn't mean they can't go lower, but 5-10 years from now they will be higher for sure. Saying that, I am glad I don't own any bank stocks now...

People Who Should Retire But Don't

I have a colleague that got a HUGE inheritance last year. Our boss pissed her of, so she quit. A year later and she is back. Her reason was "I can't be with my husband at the same house for so long". It is just too sad. Marrying the wrong spouse is one of the worst decisions one can make.

    What's on Your Life List?

Tai Chi is great. But you have to do it to see if it fits you. I actually practiced more than 2 hours a day while living and studying in China and before I started working full time. It will be great to have the time to practice again. 2 hours is not that much. One form is about 30 minutes. So...

Sleeping Well in this crazy market?

I think that if you are reasonably diversified, you probably won't face a decrease in dividend payment unless there is a real economic recession (something I don't see happening in the near future) Here is a list of "Dividend Aristocrats" - S&P 500 companies that have had increasing dividends...

Sleeping Well in this crazy market?

The drop last week was the 3rd one this year (at least in HK). These things happen EVERY YEAR, so it is very important to be mentally ready. If you plan to invest in the stock market in the next 30 years or so, you need to know that a big drop of more than 20% is not a question of "if" but...

"Your First Million is the Toughest" How long did it take you?

I am new here, but from what I read until now, I noticed that there are few here that made a lot of money by having a successful business. That means that more than 50% of their net worth is concentrated in one business, yet not many people will think they are taking a huge risk. So why so many...

"Your First Million is the Toughest" How long did it take you?

My portfolio contains around 20 stocks, but 7-8 of them are big holdings while the rest are smaller. Investing in more stocks is harder as I read all the reports and try to attend the annual meetings when I can. Also, there is no reason to take out money from the cheaper stocks and put it in...
