2024 Travel Plans

Working on it.

I'm done with international and cruises now that I am single and seen enough of the world to not have any interest anymore.

So this year I am going on U.S. driving trips to see old friends in New Mexico, Missouri, Oregon, California, North Carolina and Connecticut. I may also go to Wisconsin and drive some of Route 66, which I have not done in near 50 years when I had my '65 Vette.

I may break these visits up in two separate trips. I have not planned anything yet.

May - Diving for 1 week on Roatan with DW, DS and spouse, and DD
End of September - Two weeks on a liveaboard diving in the Banda Sea (Indonesia)
All of October - A month travelling in Australia

I suspect we will do 1 or more driving trips inside the US at other times in the year.

We're at my mother in law's house for her 90th birthday today then in the morning we'll start heading south in the RV. We plan to be gone until at least mid-March. No real plan other than to be somewhere warm where we can kayak and bicycle. The only thing we have booked is a week in a Florida campground with friends. Other than that we'll just wander until it's warm enough to head back to the Midwest.

Looks like a return trip to Kauai in May and a trip to Ontario, Canada in August. Several week-long road trips to visit family in San Diego. DH still works so we can't take month-long vacays. Not that we want to anyway - as homebodies, we enjoy our time at home. We're undertaking some home improvements over the next over the next year or two so there's also that.

I am living in Thailand and am planning a trip to Connecticut in June. It’s my 50th high school reunion. I went to the 40th and it was great. I try to meetup yearly with friends I met at the University of Connecticut in the 70’s so I will combine the two. I’m thinking it may be my last trip to CT.

Audrey, I have been to many of the places you mentioned and I enjoyed them all. This year I am staying in the states going to San Luis Obispo with a friend for a week and later in the year to Kansas to visit family.
If you like tri-tip and barbeque - check out Firestone Grill in SLO. We go every time we are there to see our son. (He goes to CalPoly). Morro Rock area is also pretty cool, there are some cool stacked rocks on the back side (bay side, vs ocean side).

Thanks Rodi for the tip. I love barbecue and so does my friend.

After a brief stopover at home for Christmas and New Years, will be packing up and jetting off later this week to continuing our winter of “Endless Summer” travels. We were in Belize November/December, home for two weeks for the holidays and next headed down to Costa Rica (Drakes Bay and Guanacaste) for a month. After Costa Rica it’s over to Cancun (Riviera Maya) and Isla Holbox to meet up with friends.

Already started brainstorming on next years Winter adventures. Thinking Panama (Boca Del Toro) and Columbia. BUT a couple of years ago we had a heck of a time exploring Cuba and want to throw a return trip to Cuba in for consideration.

Currently in Mexico through late March. Mostly in Mexico City but planning a side trip to Merida.
A week visiting family in Ireland in April for me.
A week or two in Mexico for DW in the summer.
Portuguese Camino, Lisbon, Porto, Mallorca in October
Pacific NW to visit sons in Bend OR and Seattle. Timing TBD.

So far, what's booked is 10 days in San Pancho/PV Mexico in January, Indonesia for a month in the Spring and Cusco/Machu Pichu for 10 days in the Fall. Will likely do lots of three-day things in the PNW over the Summer and a Vegas weekend at some time when it's not blistering hot.

Not as often, but longer trips.

We helped DS buy a home this month, so we may scale back for a year after a year and a half of nearly monthly trips since I retired.

But things booked & paid for the next several months already.

JAN--3 nights in Houston w/ friends then 7 day Caribbean cruise. (now w/ 2 days up at our local casino prior to be near airport as winter storm is heading in). Got a great deal & excited to try a new ship (NCL Prima)

FEB--I am heading to Sydney for 3 months then a 20 day cruise to New Caldonia & New Zealand. Was very inexpensive. Points paid for flight, hotel.
DH has annual golf trip to Myrtle Beach in Feb so he opted out. His loss.

MAR--annual Vegas trip the week before March Madness (used to be for MM but over the crowds & inflated hotel & airline prices). Our 2 oldest will be joining us over the weekend.

APR--16 day transatlantic cruise (our 1st TA) & 12 days around British Isles.
Very excited for this one!

Rest of the year we have some tentative ideas...but as I said, portfolio is shifting to less liquid with helping DS so will evaluate as the year goes on.

Has always made me antsy to not have a trip planned!

24 Travel

For us, finished up a 3 week Eastern Europe Christmas Market in mid Dec. leaving tomorrow for a month. Canada, Thailand and Middle East.
Short Orlando trip for a week in Feb,
Late Mar/Apr is Turkey and Romania
Week in Georgia (the state) in Late April.
See what the airline rates look like in a month or so.
On the maybe list for this year:
St John’s
Victoria
Normandy Coast of France, Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark
Japan
Dubai once or twice more. Maybe Oman.
Australia & NZ when flights match price points.

So for us, a normal travel year.

Have fun, enjoy life and don’t swear the small stuff.

Japan

Trying to work it in while taking care of a parent.

Supposed to visit my brother for a few days on Palm Coast, Fla. in April. In June escaping bike week here for a week long log cabin resort rental in northern Vermont. Then in August our timeshare in the White Mountains for a week, which is just an hour from our house.

The big one is in October- 17 days in Sicily and Southern Italy on an Odyssey Unlimited tour.

Hope we make it.

Sometimes, the best-laid plans go straight to hell!

We were heading over to Japan, in about 2 weeks, to stay with grandson, & to use his house as a base to wander the country for a few months, & visit with our many friends. Then came the earthquake(s). At least the airline has given us a full refund.

Now, we have to figure out where else in the world to go visit, & how to budget for hotels....

Looks like it’s going to take us 25-28 nights to do our Munich-Vienna-Prague-Dresden-Leipzig-Berlin-Hamburg-Copenhagen tour.

We just ordered some smaller luggage. Lots of trains.

How small?

We find that it is the luggage weight more than the size. For nearly a month it is really hard for us to use small luggage. I am trying to slim it down. Most of our movements are on trains so not much luggage check ins.

I find it hard to lift the luggage into those overhead storage areas on some Italian trains.. Maybe age related. :(

Just a little bit bigger than carryon. All the spinners are just a bit too big. I searched for a 24” spinner that wasn’t as wide as my current spinner but they are even bigger! This is what I found - only sold through aviation/flight crew store sites which is kind of odd, well I guess they are for flight crews. I think it will work well. Not as much overhang overhead on the train. https://www.mypilotstore.com/mypilotstore/sep/11042

A month means that we’ll be looking for laundromats about every 2 weeks. It might be 2 months overall but we’ll be visiting family after a month.

It’s June, so we won’t be packing as much warm and bulky clothing. I think this might work out for us.

Leaving in a couple of weeks for a birding trip to Costa Rica. Another one planned for September, along the Amazon River, in Brazil. I need to start thinking about 2025!

I can’t even imagine my DW packing for a trip like that! Sounds amazing. Let me know when you will be giving “packing for long trips” class!

I booked a couple air fares yesterday to set me up for most of my planned 2024 travel. These are the big trips so far, but I'll add more, I'm sure.

January - Western Caribbean cruise
May - Week with friends in Sarasota, FL AirBnB
June - Southwest USA road trip from Las Vegas - Grand Canyon North Rim + more TBD
July - Annual AirBnB Lake House Week with friends on Lake Gaston, NC
August - 2 weeks in Ireland

Fun!

I did the opposite direction from Copenhagen to Prague with DD two years ago. We stopped at the same places, except for Dresden/Leipzig since we didn’t have time. Also by train, which is my preferred way to travel.

Btw, Rick Steves sells international carry on luggage for those that might be interested (no affiliation).

I bought these for my kids years ago and they have held up well.

February: Loveland, Grand Junction, Colorado. Santa Fe, New Mexico. 3 week-long airbnbs. Exploring and ruling in/out possible places for eventual relocation. Staying in condos to get a feel for what that would be like also.

March: Bisbee, AZ area. A repeat Airbnb but a longer stay for the whole month. Lots of hiking planned in southern Arizona.
