Anyone do online tutoring?

Retired teacher having trouble adjusting to so much free time. I’m on the sub list at two schools, and if that picks up, I should be less antsy, but right now I’ve got too much time on my hands. So wondering id this online tutoring stuff might be worthwhile.

^ can't help on the experience of online tutoring. The subbing gig would be a good one for you. Maybe not getting a lot of subbing in but at some time you may that you are subbing too much. As times by I'm guessing you will value your time more and more.

I have been asked to sub and get my name on the list to do so. I think it would be fun, but I also know it would interfere with my time I treasure so much.

The same day I retired from teaching at the local college I was asked if I would sub teach. But the pay would be considerably less per contact hour and there would be no benefits. They wanted me to teach almost enough classes to be full time but without the advantages. I loved my career in academia but no thanks.
I would definitely not entertain online tutoring or online course. At least not in my field. I want to see the student's eyes to make sure they are understanding the material.

Yes, I was still teaching when the kids all went virtual for Covid, and I didn’t like it, but with so many school shootings, virtual is sadly the wave of the future for education. Glad my kid is done with high school. Sad for any grand kids.

I'm surprised school administrators aren't camped at your door if you're on sub lists. Here in Wisconsin the substitute teacher shortage is critical -- one suburban Milwaukee district had to close a school for at least a day this week because it didn't have enough available teachers.

I’m not signed up to sub at the public schools. Only two privates near my house. A little embarrassed about that, but I had enough of that when I was teaching.

I considered the tutoring business for a while (pre-covid) and realized that online would be a necessary part in order to get into the market. Then I found out how much the existing online platforms charge for new tutors. You set your rate, but they take 30% as I recall (it goes down over time to a minimum %). I decided it wasn't worth it for me. I did one gig for a guy taking an online course. We met once a week for a $25 hour (paid in cash).

If the schools ever allow more access I'd sign up for some volunteer tutoring at the high school, but the idea of getting the 5:30am call to come in to substitute teach that day isn't very appealing to me. I know the notice isn't always that late, but as the new guy...no thanks.

If you have a subject specialty, or grade level. I would think you could just post on FB or nextdoor to offer private tutoring.

Considering it would be 1:1 or 1:2 and cash payment, there would be no cut to give the organizing website, so the rate would be good enough.

If you are in an area for just private school folks, their parents can afford and value education.

Yes, I am already doing some one on one SAT prep and other tutoring. I guess I just need to be patient and hope things pick up.
Need to get on ALL those projects I planned to do before I retired.

Oh, yeah, get that project list out!
I had one, got started on a majority of them, then tossed the list as it was interfering with what I wanted to do all day .
Things still get done, but on my time.
I don't need a list anymore for suggestions of what to do.
You will adjust to retirement, give yourself some time. Enjoy every day!

My office mate (another college professor) also did tutoring on Wyzant. He seemed to like it, but this was pre-covid where Wyzant was used to set up meetings, do billing, etc. He was doing this before becoming full time and I guess just continued it somewhat.

He has since retired (decided after the first COVID shutdown that he and the spouse wanted to travel sooner rather than later), so I don't know if he is still doing this.

DW does an on-line ESL class (English as Second Language) for about half a dozen students.
