I understand the sentiment. There *are* a lot of scammy charities that prey on people's generosity. Services like GuideStar and others are helpful in avoiding the obvious scams.
I'm inclined to help kids rather than adults. Kids can find themselves in bad circumstances beyond their control. Adults, well, often it's the choices they make.
This year we added two charities that were favorites of an Aunt who passed.
I'll also add that we've been using a donor advised fund set up with Vanguard Charitable and they make giving easy.
