Consumption reducing home modifications?

My family and I are moving into our first home -- we own a condo and lived in it for a few years, but knew we'd be moving soon so we didn't put a lot of effort into making the condo efficient. We now live in an apartment, but will be making an offer today very soon which we expect to purchase (ideally after zero negotiation, but who knows!)

What are some of the modifications done or purchases people have made within their homes to help them be more efficient? So far, we plan on doing the following:

1) Using compact fluorescent lightbulbs where appropriate
2) Purchasing HE washer
3) Water-saving shower heads
4) Homes are old, so already have the heater in each room (not central)

Watch where the heat goes. Poor insulation, or old/worn windows, can really force your furnace to work.

Set back thermostat for heating and AC. Set temp lower in winter and higher in summer. As things have to be replaced (AC - Furnace/heaters - Hot Water Heaters) go for the most efficient you can purchase within reason. Most payback will come from insulation and sealing (or replacement of window; especially if they are single paned now), weather striping. If there is a unheated basement insulate the floor above. Add insulation to the attic. Storm Doors and Windows depending on the location can help too. Much of the insulation can be a DIY project.
