Tomorrow is the first anniversary of the wreck of the Costa Concordia. It happened to be Friday the 13th. That very same day, I began a Caribbean cruise (which was much more successful).
The impact of bad decisions was enormous. 32 lives were lost, and two bodies are believed to be still within the ship, which is double the size of the Titanic. The only reason that the death toll was not higher is that the powerless ship was carried by the wind back towards the shore. The salvage operation will be the largest and most complex in history. It is estimated to have a 50:50 chance of success without breaking up the wreck. Once in dry dock, it will take two years to dismantle the wreck for scrap. The salvage operation can be followed here:
