Does anyone have experience with asbestos exposure settlements and Medicare liens?

Sorry this is long. Hoping for any advice from someone who's been through this process. Very difficult for a lay person to understand.
My father had asbestosis and died of lung cancer. My mother is in the process of receiving settlements from the asbestos settlement funds and her attorney informed her that there is a Medicare lien on the settlement for $8000 for medical bills Medicare paid. There is a program called "amp" an acronym, that caps Medicare reimbursement at $12,000. She can either opt to go that route, and possibly pay Medicare more than the bill, OR she can opt to try to go what they call the "traditional route" and pay 2/3 of the 8000 but it takes a very long time, maybe a year. The amp is expedited.

If you've gone through the process, one way or another, can you explain how it worked out? If you would choose that route again?
Thanks in advance. We're not sure what to do. Mom seems to want to pay the $12,000 and get it over with. She would end up with about $90,000.
