Since we are building our own house and just getting into drywall, I bought a hopper gun from Home Depot. It worked A LOT better than I expected and 1000x better than using a spray can (which covers about 2 square feet before it runs out). You load the hopper with water diluted all purpose pre mix drywall mud (thin about the consistency of thick paint or thin pancake batter) and hook up a air compressor to the gun (I used 50 psi), and then point and spray. It did the perfect orange peel pattern, I was amazed.
Yup, not just paint texture. Get the spray on texture in a can and practice on some drywall scrap. Drywall/painter we use goes well beyond the patch borders to blend stuff in. He's good. Me, not so much.
