Exit interviews?

More than once I told them, "I'm going to work for a competitor. Why the heck should I tell you what's causing people here to leave? I might want to hire one or two of them!"

Well, what's the harm?

Either they improve in which case there is now an extra great company to work for. Or (more likely), they won't.

Only exception for me is when I expect feedback not to be taken as the gift it is.

There was no interview - no paperwork - nothing! I had to call HR and aak about cobra etc. Did manage to dump my entire remaining paychecks in my ira - still on the fence about cobra.

I'll mention a different experience. Megacorp's prior COO was everyone's dad. Just a nice calm guy, who was well liked and respected. Fairly large company over 10k people.

One of my team was leaving and I received a frantic call from my VP. "What's this person going to say on their exit?" Huh, why? Apparently the COO actually read all the exits and wasn't above giving his reports feedback on the gifts some prior employees left.
