Fun Semi-Retirement Jobs

Well, there is a job called a "fluffer", but the swimsuit models may not be quite what you were expecting.

That's not a job. That's an adventure... Or something. Certainly a VERY special calling...

My mother retired from social work almost 5 years ago. Since then, she has tried several "jobs". Some paid, some didn't. She has been

A substitute teacher in her grandchildrens school
Coordinated a turoring program for elementary students
Claims adjuster
Events Coordinator for a senior center
Family outreach for a local hospital
Receptionist at a law firm

So far her favorite is the receptionist job. It's not a big deal for her to come and go as she pleases - there are lots of other people around to answer the phones and greet clients if she decides to take a three week vacation. The office wants her to become a paralegal, and she doesn't seem excited about taking on more responsibility. She is having fun dabbling.

It you had a favorite sports team I think it would beat neat to be an usher a few times a week or once a week in the case of football.

A friend of mine works part time at an amthitheater for the similar reason.

When my dad died and mom was already retired she took a job as assistant to the reading specialist. Her DIL was the reading specialist. Her job was to listen to kids read, cut out bingo letters or do whatever little chores needed done. She only worked on Fridays but could take the day off if she had other things to do like go to Reno. She liked the little kids and after work her DIL would invite her to the house for dinner and cards.

Now DIL is retired and mom lives with my brother and her. Mom always like her DIL and the get along great so the part time volunteer job was perfect for her the first year she was widowed. Then she got too busy for working what with playing all the time.

I was thinking of being a lawyer. Maybe focus on one or two specific things, like wills and trusts or something. Low overhead, pick up a few cases and complete for cash on an as needed basis.

Trouble is, the cost of law school and there are no part time law schools in my state. My lawyer is looking for someone to take over his small town practice too. He says I am the most organized client he has had in 35 years and thinks I'd do well as a lawyer.

I was thinking of becoming a doctor, but I don't have the patients (drum roll, please  )...
