GMail Putting Doubly Valid Email Into Spam Folder

Twice now, GMail has put a email from a friend into the spam folder. This is surprising, since he is on my contacts list and we exchange emails often.

I've set up a filter that whitelists him, but I don't understand how that could have happened.

Any ideas? I'm guessing someone once marked an email from his domain as spam, but still, it shouldn't have happened.

Any idea if this will override gmail's treatment of Yahoo's DMARC Reject policy? that causes inbound mail to be silently deleted and never even makes it to the gmail spam folder.

This has been dogging me for several years now from several yahoo users who organize weekly meetups. Messages are eventually lost once the replies are nested too deep. The ironic thing is that the root cause of this is that outbound Yahoo mail does not respect the character limit on message headers.

Too many replies nested too deep results in the References: header from exceeding the accepted character limit.
