Hello all,

I've been enjoying and learning from this forum for some time and thought it would be good to introduce myself. I'm 48, married, two kids, and one ugly dog named Charlie, actually he's pretty cool looking, to me at least. Our daughter is a rising Sophomore, going to a local community college and will transfer to Michigan State next year. Our son is a rising Junior transferring to NYU in the fall. My plan is to retire next year to beautiful Northern Michigan and build our dream house on 40 acres that we already own. This will put us near family.

I'm an active duty Air Force pilot and have proudly served for the past quarter century. I've seen my share of Iraq and Afghanistan and the ups/downs of the military lifestyle. But now it's time for the next phase of life. I'm debt free, have a decent portfolio, our children’s tuition is covered, and I have a good military pension with medical and dental...all thanks to the good Lord above!

Since joining the military, we've saved like crazy, lived below our means, invested wisely using the Bogleheads investment philosophy (most of the time), and had a goal of one day retiring early. Well that day is nearly here.

Just wanted to say hello and congrats to all those in retirement or heading that way!

Aviator, welcome to the forum! It sounds like you've done everything right to get to this point at your age -- congratulations. I'll look forward to your future posts.

In another 10 years or so, I hope to be in a similar situation. Congratulations to you on nearing the successful completion of a well planned and well executed departure from the working world.

Welcome Aviator. Is Northern Michigan the newest best kept secret?

Welcome Aviator. Is Northern Michigan the newest best kept secret?

I believe it is....but don't tell anyone else. Northern and NW lower Michigan is absolutely gorgeous. There's so much to do in all 4 seasons and the cost of living is just about right.
