Happy birthday John Lennon

Did anyone see Lennon, Harrison or Beatles live?

My DW saw the Beetles in August 1965 at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston. Her folks got her 2 tickets for her 15th birthday and she took a friend. She went to the late show and said that the screaming was so loud you could barely hear them. So cool!!

We saw Paul McCartney and Wings together in '76 at the Summit in Houston.

I thought it was really "I'm very bored" and the whole Paul is Dead thing was just an early viral media sensation.
Actually it was "cranberry sauce" as the song "Strawberry Fields Forever" was recorded just after America's Thanksgiving Day. That single (with "Penny Lane") was the very first record I bought with my own money, in early Feb. 1967. (That was a great year for a young kid, in terms of hit singles.)

I heard from Nellie McKay (big Beatles fan who said, “Poor Paul. He always came second.”) that Paul had written “World Without Love” and was playing it for John to see what he thought. John commented, “you can stop after the first line”.

First line? “Please lock me away.” The song went to Peter and Gordon, I think.

:D

Peter Asher (of Peter and Gordon, and later a hugely successful record producer for James Taylor and others) tells that story, too (at 17:17):

My sister saw the Beatles in Indianapolis in 1964. She was 14. She received the ticket for her birthday from a girlfriend’s family. She said it was so loud they could hardly hear the songs.

I'm a bigger fan of Harrison and Lennon post Beatles.

Years ago I saw Julian Lennon at a small venue and got perhaps a very small taste of what the old man may have been like (and definitely what he sounded like) live. He was excellent.

Also saw Mccartney years ago which was very worthwhile.

Not me, but my Big Sis CA. 1964 got to ask the Beatles a question at a news conference when (IIRC) she worked as an intern (or whatever) on the CHI Trib. Could have been when she was stationed in Gary IN. In any case, there was a photo in the paper with her name in the caption: Words to the effect: Ko'olau's Big Sis asks Ringo why he doesn't smile more(?)(?) Response: "I'm trying to teach my face to smile more."

That was a pretty cool newspaper for me to take to High School and show the other kids but YMMV.

Well, (not to be left out), my late wife's, late mother's hairdresser was attending an AA meeting up in Orillia, Ontario, where Ringo was appearing at the local casino - he walked in and said "Hi, I'm Richard".

So there.

My personal claim to fame was seeing Elvis in concert a little less than a year before he passed. Yes, he was overweight, but he was a great entertainer and I thought he sang very well. It was a long concert. The only concert that was ever sold out “in the round” at the Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Sort of like Brian Wilson questioning Tony Asher about his first line "I may not always love you." Fortunately Brian actually listened to the rest of Tony's lyrics. Fortunately Brian was also smart enough to let brother Carl sing the song. And the rest, as they say, is history. YMMV

Great story but Elvis is not dead.

Great thread with all the stories.

I do not think I know anyone that saw the Beatles. DW saw Paul McCartney and Wings before we met, circa 1977.

Did anyone see Lennon or Harrison as solo artists? Neither toured much.

I did see Dhani Harrison last year when he opened for ELO. Sounds and looks a lot like his dad.

OMG, I was working at the Ramada Inn where Elvis stayed during that concert. I was a waitress (18 yrs. old in college) and worked the night of the concert. It was insane. He rented the entire 4th floor of the hotel. It was located on the corner of Neil and Kirby where the Walgreens is now. Apparently he walked around in disguise. The Assembly Hall is now the State Farm Center, I live in Champaign.

That is a great story! I wonder if Elvis snuck out the back door of the hotel and went to Uncle John’s for banana pancakes!

I DVRd a PBS JL special, rebroadcast on John's 80th BD. Just watched it last night (and recalled seeing it originally.) Although we all know about the tragedy, not sure we all know (knew) how JL changed after his hiatus in Cali with subsequent return to NYC. He was a changed man. Too bad he didn't have a chance to live a full life.

Rumor has it, he did. And those peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I have great stories about Bruce Springsteen and Fleetwood Mac in C-U, but that's for another thread.

Great memories. Never saw him live but did see Julian in a small venue. Great show!

DD's birthday too. And DGD1 was born on George Harrison's birthday. DGD2 missed McCartney's birthday by 3 days. I kept telling DD to keep squeezing her knees together, but she's so selfish. Sigh.

Happy heavenly birthday, John! :D

Major talent. The Beatles are still my favorite band.

Mine, too. Lately I have been listening to them almost every night on Youtube, just before bedtime. Often on weekends I listen to early Beatles for 3-4 hours. The early Beatles is the period of Beatles songs that I enjoy most.

I was never able to see them in person back in the 1960's (no money or time), but nothing can stop me from staging my own "concert" on Youtube now and it's a lot of fun.

By the way, I also want to wish a Happy Birthday to Aja8888 and all the others here with birthdays today.
