How early is ER?

FI at 51 - ER at 58. Strangely, I enjoyed 51 to 58 - until I didn't. "Early" is a state of mind. YMMV

It's no longer work when I don't have to be there.

Only three ways to get to other side of that hill: climb up, go around or dig through. I won't pretend it's not there.

It all depends on your health. 60 years old and healthy = early. 50 years old and unhealthy = too late.

I retired at 56 and this seemed early to me and others in my social group. You could easily do it at 55 given your facts. Some advice though, don't fixate on early retirement at your age. If you do it will take up an inordinate amount of your time and emotions. By counting off the days they will seem interminable. Best to just LBYM and focus on your current life, eg family, doing your best at work, etc. If you do ER will always be there. I didn't even think of ER until about age 53.
