Hi all, I received an email yesterday from this company stating.

“We received your LendingUSA application on 01/02/2023. Unfortunately, there is a credit freeze on your TransUnion credit report, and we are unable to make a decision on your application. Once you have lifted the credit freeze, please click on the button below to continue your application.”

What would you do? Of course, I made no application for credit. I do have my credit frozen. My first thought was to contact the company. I wonder if that might be the intent of the email. Should I just be glad my credit is frozen and ignore the email?

ETA, The company and the email address look to be legit. At least the email address doesn’t look like a spam address. Of course, there is a link in the email. I’m not brave enough to try it.

Thanks
Murf

It's spam, I'd ignore it completely. Most likely if you check the actual sending url, it's not even really legit.

Thanks Aerides, that was my initial thought too. How do I find the “actual sending url’?
When I go to the header of the email it looks legit being
dtlp@ lendingusa.com

Most spam I receive has a more obviously spamish address. Asking to see if I can learn something, not questioning your reply.

Thanks again!

I always ignore this stuff especially if it’s not a company that I initiated contact with.

I mean the sending address, it depends on your email provider, but usually after the bolded cosmetic display, there's a smaller print version, which should end in the proper dot com.

Also, mouse over (Don't click) other urls and stuff in the email, and view the footer area as well.

On the offchance the email is legit, then I'd still ignore. Your freeze is doing what you asked for, and you won't get any helpful info by contacting the lender, nor any further action you could take.

I don’t ignore these. I go to the company website independently of the links in the email. Many have a provision to report spam. I’d report the issue if possible.

I received a please verify your email notice from an online forum devoted mostly to gamers. It was my burner email account that I use mostly for online, non financial stuff. I thought it was odd, so I went directly to the site (I never click on any links in emails) and entered my email and then did a forgot password process. Sure enough someone created an account with my email address. I deleted the account, changed the password again and logged off. I went back a few days later and verified the account no longer existed, but it’s kind of creepy to know someone else is using an email address. This time it was caught by a verification process. I wonder where else it is being used.

i'd report to whichever credit reporting agencies in which you've locked your credit. i'd also CALL Lending USA to report the scam.

Thanks all! I guess I’ll trying calling LendingUSA & Transunion tomorrow.
Every form of communication on the LendingUSA site wanted me to enter my SS number. That’s not happening.
I think I’ll try Transunion first.

Thanks again!

I found this in the FAQ on the lendingusa.com site:

What do I do if I think I’ve become a victim of fraud?
If you believe you are a victim of fraud or identity theft, it’s important to alert us as fast as possible. Call us at (800) 994-6177 ext. 535 or email our team of fraud specialists at verification@lendingusa.com, and a team member will reach out to assist you with the process.

Did you file any sort of application with LendingUSA? If not, I would delete their email. It's a phishing attempt.

Forward the email to the above mentioned email, they can verify if it is spam or not.

No, I didn’t apply for any credit anywhere.
Transunion shows them trying to do credit checks on my account. Account is frozen.
Them attempting to do credit checks makes me think it’s an identity fraud attempt over a phishing attempt. I am no expert, of course.

On the other hand. I tried to forward the email, as suggested. It bounced back, so that makes me wonder.

This kind of stuff makes me feel a little ill, even knowing my accounts are frozen.

Thanks

Is your credit card(s) trying to increase your limits?
Did you apply for new or about to renew your insurance?

These may trigger a credit check.

No new action I can see. My homeowners insurance tried to check credit. I can see it on my report. It is different from this business, which shows up on my report also.

Thanks!
