I use Kayak, and google flights to do my search for flights. I see Norwegian has nonstop flights from Los Angeles to Rome but you will need to purchase meal ($45).

I then booked British Airways with a connecting flight from Dublin since they still serve meal on the plane. Last year, we flew to London with British Airways and there were 2 meals + a sandwich snack. Both of the above airlines allow one carry-on luggage and one small personal item.

After booking with British Airways, I then noticed the flights are operated by Aer Lingus Irish Airlines. TripAdvisor has a lot of bad reviews with Aer Lingus, including someone who was forced to pay extra baggage fee of $100 on the 2nd leg within Europe. I wonder what kind of issues we might face with this airline. It is too late for me to cancel and go back to Norwegian.

Anyone has experience flying connecting flights with Aer Lingus?

IMO if you booked thru BA the BA baggage policies apply, they call this a code share. You lost me when you said you booked a connector instead of a nonstop because you didn't want to pay for a meal. I pay extra just to get a nonstop especially on a flight of that length.

Thanks. I also had a good experience with BA and Norwegian's review is also not favorable, so not just for the meals. :)

I fly to Asia mostly, and almost all include free check-in luggage and meals. But European flights are different stories I guess.

After the flight check back in and tell us if you got dinged with any extra fees. The fine print can get expensive when flying..

We’ve flown Aer Lingus and enjoyed it tremendously. The planes were new and we had no issues.
My experience with BA however has changed over the years though. Our last European flight with them was on an old 747 and much of the equipment, arm rests, TV’s etc were in poor condition or not working at all. Surprised it made it over the pond. For Europe we like Lufthansa.

What dates in September?

September 13th to 22nd.
I believe BA is in LAX terminal 7. We will walk over to terminal 6 Alaska lounge with our CSR card. On returning from FCO, we will also check out their lounge there.

Your best bet is to look at flights on Asian or Middle Eastern carriers. Their levels of service and comfort, even in coach, are far superior to any of the American or European carriers. Sad, but true.

Get creative and find a multiple airline trip if necessary and avail yourself of an intermediate stop (one or 2 days) in another city/country you have always wanted to visit.

Just MHO after 30 some years of putzing around the airline business.

:)

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Yes. My experience also. When connecting thru Tokyo via any Japanese airlines, they have staff holding signs at the gate of leg one and escort you to the next flight. I do not worry about missing the connection.

LAX sits at the same distance to Europe or Asia. From Asia to Europe, it is also roughly the same difference, so flying from LAX via Asia to Europe means doubling the distance. I will likely do that route next when I have a travel plan to Asia first then Europe.
