Can anyone recommend a nice moderate priced hotel that is centrally located for tourism in Rome? Any advice or suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Not sure what you consider moderate but we always stay at Starhotels Metropole Hotel just a couple of walkable blocks from the Termini train station which we arrive from after landing at FCO. Great hotel and walkable to most of the popular Rome sites. Many restaurants right out the front door also. If you're continuing on to other Italy cities this makes getting back to the Termini train station a breeze.

Also, like most hotel's, if you join their reward program beforehand you get a slight discount when booking.

Have you considered AirBnB?

We're in a lovely apartment just outside the tourist zone here in Madrid. An excellent value IMO compared to hotels in the area and we've got 1.5 baths, a kitchen, dining room, separate bedroom, and a living room. We have similar stays next month in Venice, Florence, Cortona, Rome, and Nairobi. Many of the rooms advertised on sites like Expedia are in fact also available through AirBnB. We stocked the kitchen with cheese, wine, bread, coffee, etc. Takes the edge off restaurant pricing and hotel breakfasts. Our street was alive with locals eating dinner at 10:00pm last night and that's fine with us. As our jet lag subsides, we'll be out there with them.

BTW, our apartment in Rome is in Trastavere. This is our first visit to the Eternal City and in addition to the popular tourist sites, I've used Google Maps to scout out neighborhood for markets and local restaurants.

I always have a preference for AirBnbs.

We stayed in a penthouse apartment in Rome last November. The views were phenomenal, even though the weather didn’t cooperate. It was a bit of a distance from the tourist areas, but we were fine with uber and public transport.

We just finished 10 days in Rome at this hotel: https://all.accor.com/hotel/2909/index.it.shtml?utm_campaign=seo+maps&utm_medium=seo+maps&utm_source=google+Maps Our room was small but comfortable with rain shower stall (no tub). Rooftop bar and swimming pool with views of Colosseum. The staff was very helpful for example in printing out train tickets and getting taxis quickly. The hotel is close to the Colosseum and within walking distance (for us) to the Termini train station. A number of decent and inexpensive restaurants nearby. A very handy mini-market close by. In room safe and small fridge. Free water (2 bottles) daily. Nice buffet breakfast that you can include in your hotel rate or buy as needed. Definitely recommended!

We usually look near the train stations as they are good for a day ride to the countryside or bus routes in town. Usually AirB&B's.
