"Push Presents"

No, but it describes many marriages. I work with many people whose marriages were arranged. For them it's a transaction for sure. I also know many people for whom the journey to marriage is a negotiation. You have A; I need A; you need B; I can bring B to the table.

Romance (love) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote: In Ladies of the Leisure Class, Bonnie G. Smith depicts courtship and marriage rituals that may be viewed as oppressive to both men and women. She writes "When the young women of the Nord married, they did so without illusions of love and romance. They acted within a framework of concern for the reproduction of bloodlines according to financial, professional, and sometimes political interests." Subsequent sexual revolution has lessened the conflicts arising out of liberalism, but not eliminated them.

De Beers has to sell those [-]Worthless Rocks[/-] Diamonds somehow. Since they are much more plentiful... they control the supply to keep prices high. Best to work on peoples' guilt with propaganda.

My all time favorite is the ploy to name a star after yourself. [Sarcastic] And it will be registered forever in the Star Registry! Wow. International Star Registry: Name a Star And best of all, your star can come in options Custom, Deluxe, and if you really care about the person... Ultimate. Let's face it, why be cheap. Go ahead get the Ultimate. :p

The thing about Bu!!Sh!t marketing is that there is always a new crop of impressionable young people who are born to fall for it.

When the basic product or service is really a commodity (or worthless), they have to resort to propaganda to create an environment that influences people to buy it.

What did P.T. Barnum say? "There's a sucker born every minute!"

I have started Chinaco's "Name That Star Service". And it is much cheaper than all of the competitors. Send me $10 and I will email your Basic Certificate (in ASCII text of course). How can I deliver this wonderful service to you at such low prices? The miracle of modern technology of course! If you want the Ultimate package (HTML with a graphic) that will be $15. :D

That is the silliest, most inane product I have ever heard of! I can't believe anyone would actually spend real money on something like this. Thank you chinaco for updating my education..............
:duh:

chinaco,

OK, but do you provide a wallet card like the big guys do?

"The package also includes a complimentary personalized wallet card imprinted with the star name and coordinates."

A friend of mine got one of those star things as a baby shower gift. I managed not to snicker, as it was from her stepmom. But the naivete!

Measbh, I really cannot argue with the points you made here. Women (and men) would do well the clear away the "clouds of romance" and look at the more practical aspects of getting married. More marriages would be successful because the expectation would be realistic. But you know how it is, when it comes to matters of the heart your brains go out the window.

I once had a roommate from Pakistan. Her parents kept sending "bios" of eligible bachelors who met the family screening criteria (which included income, political connections, and status in the community). These "Bios" were crafted exactly like CVs for a job application. My friend was spending an inordinate amount of her spare time fending off potential suitors until she eloped with her romantic love.
:smitten:

It all worked out in the end.

I know almost the mirror image case to this one. My friend, an American white woman, met an Indian man in graduate school on the east coast USA. They were in their early thirties and neither he nor she had been married before. They "fell in love" and in spite of numerous visits from his family all the way from India, and from his Indian friends here in the states to convince him what a horrible mistake it would be if they married, they followed their hearts and went ahead. They were together 10 reasonably happy years, and had a son, but eventually "sh*t happened" and they divorced. He is remarried, and this time (at age 50!) after dating US women for year or two he asked his parents to find him a nice Indian girl from Mumbai. He is now married to this woman and they are proud parents of a new baby boy.

Although I feel that romance is high on the list of hazards to young men, and in general am a supporter of arranged marriage, I shudder to think of who my mother might have come up with for me.

Ha

My mother would have found me a nice irish catholic boy who promised to live within twenty miles of her house forever .

Hey, you're not my cousin Moe, are you??

And hazards to women. I know the handful that my parents would have selected from. They are still in contact with them and/or their parents.

Push Presents

What a crock! This "expectation" of a bauble for a job well done is what is wrong with the "I deserve it" generation. What happens if the child is less than perfect? Does the father get to take it back and exchange it for something cheaper? If the kid turns out to be a mess, does the mother have to return it herself when he is dumped onto society at 18 with no education, no marketable job skills, and a nasty little meth habit? This is the worst kind of crass commercialism and the fact that we have spoiled selfish mothers propogating this makes me want to puke.

NOW I remember why I forgot to have kids...
