This is the weirdest ad campaign I have ever heard of (but I bet it is effective).

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Smurfette is left for dead. Baby Smurf is left crying and orphaned as the Smurf's village is carpet bombed by warplanes — a horrific scene and imagery not normally associated with the lovable blue-skinned cartoon characters.

These are the scenes being shown as part of a new UNICEF ad-campaign on Belgian television.

Most European TV is pretty limited compared to the US but a lot less censored. The adds can be really wild. The condom adds are a good example. Also nothing quite like watching reruns of Baywatch dubbed in german.

I haven't found a clip yet to view it on the net.

No loss on Smurfette, I never liked her. 'Tis a better village without her.

But I hope that Farmer Smurf, Handy Smurf, and of course, Brainy Smurf, survived to mount a counter-attack.

Baywatch had dialogue? Geez, maybe I should have turned on the sound!

Although it's hard to imagine what I've been missing...
