The lowest I ever paid was 19.9/gallon. The range I remember that was common in the '60s was 23.9 to 27.9. I use to have a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite that had a 6.6 gallon tank. Since I never let it get lower than a 1/4 tank, it usually cost me only a little more than $1 to fill it up. I wish I could say that about my diesel 4x4 with a 35 gallon tank.

I don't remember paying much attention to it until I had to start paying for it in 1967-68 when I bought a car. Then I remember it being in the low .30's/gal.

Before that I had a Yamaha 100cc motorcycle and I didn't pay any attention to gas prices because it used so little. Filling the tank on that was almost literally pocket change.

Actually its an interesting fact that the gas price in 1920 according to a letter written by my grandfather was also about .20/gallon. I recall in 1972 getting to Ca and 22.9 was the price then.

This post reminded me of the days when the 10th of a cent gasoline didn't exist. Anyone remember when that started? I don't remember it being around when I started driving in 1952. Perhaps in the sixties. Maybe someone recalls when that happened.

Your chart shows that in '71 when I bought gas for $.219 the average national price $.36. Pretty significant difference. I now prices can fluctuate pretty widely, but that's like 35%. I swear I remember buying the gas at that price, but...maybe I need to start taking some tumeric.

Nah, you don't need any tumeric. Those are just averages and like today, there were probably some pretty big geographic differences.

Aside from price, the other thing I remember that I'd like to forget was the arab oil embargo and the gas lines that caused. I guess one of these days we may learn our lesson and get off of foreign oil (not)
