The Intern !

Went and saw "The Intern" yesterday, cute movie. It is about a retiree (Robert DiNero) going back to work at the ripe young age of 70, as a senior intern at an internet start-up headed by Anne Hathaway.

I could definitely relate to some of the scenes after working for my son at one of his internet start-up companies for about seven months. I was known affectionately as the "OWG", old white guy by my co-workers.

Anyway a good way to kill a couple of hours and got the six buck matinee price too.

+1 on The Martian... go ahead and hand Damon the Oscar... cinematography and effects were off the chain.. I believe the Mars scenes were filmed in Jordan.

We liked the movie but seeing a 70 year old ex executive taking a job as an intern and driving the boss around? Doing it not because he needs the money but to stay busy. I wonder how many people in real life are willing to do this...

I saw it and thought it was good. The characters were stereotypical but that's Hollywood, I guess. I have worked for many bosses like the one played by Anne Hathaway - bright but overwhelmed by HR and administrative issues and guilty about not spending time with her children - and I thought her portrayal was spot on. The DeNiro character in retirement reminded me of my own retirement activities - hanging out at Starbucks, yoga classes, spending time with friends and family. I think he travelled a bit, too. He wasn't satisfied with it and wanted to go back to an office job. The difference is, I love doing that stuff and I'm 51 not 70. And I can't imagine putting up with a dysfunctional boss like that ever again (especially without getting paid for it!). The intern's motto was "life is all about love and work, work and love", or something like that. I believe there's plenty more to life than work.

Sounds like a good movie to watch but we have not gone to a theater in years, so will watch out for the DVD at the local public library. I like De Niro and enjoy nearly all of the movies he's in.

But, when I saw the thread title of "The Intern!" with the exclamation mark, the first thought that crossed my mind was "Oh no, must be something about that blue dress again".

My dad knows I'm near to ER and he himself retired even earlier than I am aiming for. The intern character sounds like he's channeling my father. My dad is constantly suggesting I stay working as long as I can, laments that he himself misses the involvement in work, and I can see him going back to work just to get back that work connection. He's very well off, has plenty of activities, but hasn't found anything that really makes him feel as satisfied as work ever did.

As opposed to my own experience in which I cannot wait to no longer work, cannot imagine ever going back once I escape, and get much more satisfaction even now from non-work than my working life ever provided. Different people apparently have very different experiences and sources of fulfillment.

It's hot as the blazes here and that sounds like a good idea for tomorrow afternoon. The theater nearest our house has a really good gelato place next door. Two good activities for a hot afternoon.
