Hello fellow ERs! I wanted to start a topic where each of us can share our challenges that we face in or in preparation of our retirements.

I think this thread should be as light as it is useful. It could be a post to have a good laugh -or- cry, blow off some steam, but remain in the context of all of our main intent and purpose....SERIOUS RETIREMENT. Let's keep things brief, but learning as well. By all means, if need be, let us know something about yourself to help understand your plight like age, location, profession or trade you slaved away to get where your are...etc.

Nothing? I don't think I ever cried over investments, even during the dark days of 2008-2009.

To be honest, I am curious about why you are asking such a question - - are you having serious problems with your portfolio right now? I hope not but if you are, maybe we can help.

As you become accustomed to our forum, and read/post regularly for a while, I'm sure you will become more familiar with age, location, and occupation of most of our regulars as well as who is retired and who is not. Be sure to check everyone's profile since many of us put more information there to share with others. Please feel free to fill our your profile too, with any information like that that you wish to share with us.

Nothing? I don't think I ever cried over investments, even during the dark days of 2008-2009. .....

+1 I've been investing since my mid 20s and will be 60 later this year... so 35 years.... I have a well balanced and diversified portfolio so nothing that happens in the market rattles me much. Life is too short.

SERIOUS RETIREMENT

Retirement means not having to be serious any more.

Not a day for being miffed for me. It's even one of those rare days where, in sports, there is a game involving two of my "home teams": Illinois visiting North Carolina in college football. No matter the outcome, the "good guys" (for me) win.

The market's closed, so nothing of concern there either but I think that watching markets or a portfolio on a daily or hourly basis is an unfortunate use of a hard-earned retirement. That's just my point of view, of course.

Serious retirement? I'm sorry sir, you have the wrong forum. This one is for Early Retirement.

Like many here, I had a long career in a good MegaCorp. In my case over 30 yrs. Learned to invest from my father and from my own mistakes made over those years. Biggest learning (ie..nice way to say "mistake") was getting excited during the dot com bubble. On the bright side, I had limited our exposure purposefully so long term impact of the bubble burst wasn't important in the grand scheme of things.

Since I've been investing for most of 30+ yrs, my portfolio is what I'm comfortable with in good times and bad. So I don't really see things as going wrong in my portfolio....just some better years and some not so good years. Overall the performance is good enough for our needs.

Biggest challenge approaching retirement was getting totally comfortable that I'd know how to manage our funds when no more paycheck was coming in. That's a HUGE change, like losing a huge safety net to your life. Especially true when you retire early and have several years before SS kicks in. It also feels very confusing when you first try to figure out how to mange taxable, tax deferred and tax exempt investments as well as other topics like when to take SS and how to manage Required Minimum Distributions. So many things to think about. Just have to take the time to learn about each in turn. Too me quite awhile but I'm pretty comfortable now in knowing what I need to do in most cases and when I need to ask questions before taking action.

This board was key in raising my confidence. The stories of others about how they manage things and advice of others to use tools like Firecalc and I-ORP really made things much easier for me. (Thanks to all you that contribute!)

I've been retired for just over 1/2 year now and can say that I've really got nothing that "miffs" me since I retired. Just enjoying life and additional time with those I love. I do all our financial management but spend relatively little time on it now that I've set things up the way I want.

Our portfolio? about 1/3 rentals, so this morning....
What do the wealthy landlords do? Besides count our money? Finally got a tenant out after seven weeks with no rent, court filing and service fees, court appearances... Poor fella - he really was working at it, but he had so much stuff and times is hard and his dog ate his homework. Me and my gal and a helper met at 8, spent 1 1/2 hours unloading the place and putting the superior items out for the Saturday morning yardsale traffic to find. Got a huge kick out of a framed motivational poster turned face to the wall. Enjoy! Album

Our stocks did something this last month, which i understand resulted in us losing a bunch of net worth, but it didn't have the smell of old dog kennel that lodged in my nostrils....
