Hi Folks. I’ve been lurking here for a long time now, and just recently de-cloaked. I’ve read most of the FAQs and have been keeping up with recent posts also. I’m really impressed with the knowledge of the posters here and your willingness to help out.

I’ve worked for Megacorp for 27 years and will turn 60 next month. I fully intended to work 1 to 2 more years, but last Thursday megamanagement managed to madden most (if not all) of its minions. I’ve been mulling my options for a long time, and knew that ER was easily doable, so I sez to myself, “Self, you could retire and not put up with this any more.” But wouldn’t you know, it was like talking to a brick wall. An hour later, I had the same conversation. Some of the words actually sunk in, and didn’t sound too bad. By mid-afternoon I had myself talked in to it. I ran it past DW, and she said, “What’s stopping you?” I slept on it overnight and still felt the same way the next morning, so gave my 3 months notice. I can’t seem to get the smile off my face! :)

My non COLA’d pension will provide about as much as I currently take home after taxes and investments. Everything is paid off, so no major expenses. Our 201K and 403B have taken a beating, but are starting to come back. We don’t need them to live comfortably so hopefully over the next 10 years or so they’ll grow and provide a nice cushion. Or maybe we’ll cash them in, take the money to Vegas and let it all ride on red for 3 spins. ;) I’ve always wondered if a sudden sunk feeling would be less painful than a slow sinking feeling.

Anyway, thanks to all the posters here. You’ve been a great help and inspiration to me.

Welcome to the club. It's better than you could have imagined.

Welcome ,I'd say take $1,000 to Vegas and get it a whirl .I retired two years ago and it is great . I'm slowly getting all the projects done around my house and have plenty of time to play .

Welcome Larry. No matter when you pull the plug you are gonna worry about it a little. Sounds like you are in good shape and will be fine.

I retired four years ago at age 55 and I wouldn't go back to work for any amount of money. Life is wonderful without the stress and BS.

Congratulations. You probably know this already, but you are effectively retired as soon as word hits the street. Don't let it bother you - go in late, take a looooooooooong lunch and go home early. Oh and wipe that grin off your face. :D

So glad you "de-cloaked" and joined us.:greetings10:

Congratulations Larry and welcome aboard.

Welcome, and congratulations! I really know how you feel. Now you just have to get through the next 3 months, and that could be harder than it sounds. The period between the time I made my decision and gave notice to my last day felt like an eternity. I thought I would start to feel a detachment from the stress knowing there was an end in sight, but in reality it was even more difficult dealing with it because of that persistent little voice in the back of my head that was whispering "who cares?!" whenever work problems would have to be addressed. Hang in there!

I'm a real high roller. I'll probably try to find a casino that still has 25 cent Blackjack machines and blow $10.00 :)

The grin seems to be a permanent part of my face now. lol

You're right. The job stress is already MUCH lower.

I hadn't really thought about that aspect of the next 89 (but who's counting?) days.

Do you think it would help to say, "who cares" out loud:confused:

My plan is to go along to get along. We'll see how it goes. ;)

Congratulations Lofty!

I heard a catchy exit phrase for someone leaving a job. "See ya, slaves" is what James Cagney said in the movie. I would have liked to use it when leaving some jobs but not the last one. I liked that one OK. Still not better than ER though.

I've given considerations for my last words at work to be :
Free at last - Free at last
Thank You God I'm free at last !!!

Not sure that would go over good though, in my current environment.

I left a sign over my desk that said "Don't drink the Kool Aid". :greetings10:

Congrats, Larry! My FIRE date is July 31 so I'm right behind you  . I have 7 weeks of vacation remaining, so June 12 is L.D.A.W. :moonwalk:

Well, silly me! Never having retired before, I didn't realize I could only retire on the first day of a month. I gladly agreed to retire on July 1. :)70 days (but who's counting).

Janet, you're right. I'm getting sucked further in to the stress of the job. Must learn to say, "Who cares?" lol

Welcome

Hi Larry, Welcome to the forum. It is really full of good info on ealry retirement.

Congrats Larry. You won't regret it.

Just for fun, to lighten up the office, when you get to w*rk you could pin a sprig of mistletoe to the small of your back. :D
