Hi Folks. I’ve been lurking here for a long time now, and just recently de-cloaked. I’ve read most of the FAQs and have been keeping up with recent posts also. I’m really impressed with the knowledge of the posters here and your willingness to help out.
I’ve worked for Megacorp for 27 years and will turn 60 next month. I fully intended to work 1 to 2 more years, but last Thursday megamanagement managed to madden most (if not all) of its minions. I’ve been mulling my options for a long time, and knew that ER was easily doable, so I sez to myself, “Self, you could retire and not put up with this any more.” But wouldn’t you know, it was like talking to a brick wall. An hour later, I had the same conversation. Some of the words actually sunk in, and didn’t sound too bad. By mid-afternoon I had myself talked in to it. I ran it past DW, and she said, “What’s stopping you?” I slept on it overnight and still felt the same way the next morning, so gave my 3 months notice. I can’t seem to get the smile off my face!
My non COLA’d pension will provide about as much as I currently take home after taxes and investments. Everything is paid off, so no major expenses. Our 201K and 403B have taken a beating, but are starting to come back. We don’t need them to live comfortably so hopefully over the next 10 years or so they’ll grow and provide a nice cushion. Or maybe we’ll cash them in, take the money to Vegas and let it all ride on red for 3 spins. I’ve always wondered if a sudden sunk feeling would be less painful than a slow sinking feeling.
