Another Lesson in Computer Security

I'd much rather have a "user ignore" feature than this.
Why would you want everyone to ignore all those posts you type? ;)

Cuz then I wouldnt have to spend a lot of time on spelling and punctuation. You know, the stuff with the heads and naked people gathering dust

As long as I'm a $ contributing member and producing about 1/3 of the content, yes..."WE". ;)

The $ might get you a say in these matters, but producing 1/3 "content"?

1/3 volume, yes. But "content"? That's questionable.

Oh and YOU'D be SO on it! ;)

Was it the tactless political nutjob posts? Or the constant stream of profanity and vulgar jokes? Or something else entirely? ;)

I didnt say it was GOOD content. But I will be willing to debate you in a 20,000 post thread on what constitutes content and the relative merits and virtues of volume in the context of content...

After another morning with the nested quotes, they're fine if you want to type a simple reply. If you want to insert comments into other peoples replies here and there, its a pain in the butt. But then again I hate those 10 part replies, both doing them and reading them, and when discussions get to those specific detailed levels, they've usually become one of those worthless mutually destructive diatribes.

You mean like this one? (Sorry, but you set it up soooo nicely. ;))

And just to be clear, I didnt say that I had (or wanted) a "say" in any matters. In fact, those with scorecards will remember that I've steadfastly refused any involvement in having any kind of "say" in anything at all.

I simply used the friendly collective "we" when criticizing, rather than the accusatory "All Y'all". ;)

This would be the polar opposite of the old "Jim Kelly" maneuver where anytime anything good happened, it was "me" and "I", and anytime anything bad happened, it was "we" and "us", as in "I threw a couple of touchdowns, but then we also threw some interceptions".

Little tidbit for you old time football fans...

Thats the only stuff that makes me want to keep reading your posts.

Its that OTHER stuff!

Wait, there ISNT any other stuff!

 ;)

Just for the record, I'm a big fan of the nested quotes...

Where do they nest? I have never heard of that breed. ;)

Hunh, my LISP editor is handling the quoting replies just fine... helps me keep all the brackets & parens nested & matched!

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

In the same vein, some security experts figured out how to punch holes in corporate security. They picked up some old usb thumbdrives for a few bucks a bucket, wiped them, filled them with some ... err ... images...and a trojan virus designed to gather sensitive data and email it back to them.

Then threw them on the ground around the employee entrance to a credit union.

Took no time at all for the data to start flowing.

yep, we had to install software that disabled usb mass storage for non-admins. USB thumb drives are a huge threat.

Sledgehammer  can't be beat.  Still if you have a reason to keep a hard drive functioning, or would like to ensure data no longer needed is gone (to prevent a burglar from robbing you twice when they burgle your computer). Try this product:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6270,00.asp

BC Wipe is used by the govt. and contractors to sanitize drives.  Crank the overwrite up to 7 times.

When I dispose of a computer I take the hard drive out, break it down so that I get to the disks, and then cut them into pieces. (Too much confidential information on the disks). I would much prefer something easier. Does the program you referred to work so that there is no worry about the information being reproduced? If so, I'll use it, it's a lot of d*** work to physically rip the drive up.

This program looks past the file system and simply writes a series of ones and zeros to every part of the hard drive. For your standard data recovery center, this product makes the disk unrecoverable. I use a tool at work called Encase, which is what law enforcement uses to catch all those nasty kiddie porn creeps and anyone else doing dirty cyberdeeds. This product makes the disks unrecoverable for that, too. Now if somebody wants to get out an electron microscope, well, they may be able to pick up fragments, but...

You guys really dont appreciate the value of a good 20lb sledge.

It certainly is gratifying to swing, and I plan on using it on hard drives before they leave the residence, but the software solution is what I use in between OS rebuilds. Oh, also, BC Wipe adds a utility to your recycle bin which truly deletes the file. If you right click on the recycle bin (or right click on a particular file) you'll have a menu choice of "delete with wiping" (or something similar) and this will actually go out and overwrite the space the file occupied three times. A normal delete simply removes the files entry from the file allocation tables, but it still physically exists. Tools like Encase can recognize the file structure when it analyses the disk and restore it in 1 second.
