They're distraught because the overall pie just got smaller and their 2% cut of the pie just got smaller as well.

Some are executing orders for others (as a trader for a broker), others are trading as principal for their firm. Their profitability at trading is the be all and end all of their annual bonus and continued employment at their firm.
