Nothing to snicker about. I had a feeling that if I dug through that site I would eventually encounter hatred and racism all in the name of Biblical Christianity. It didn't take me long, and I'm not even going to link to what I found.

Brew, don't take this personally. Really, don't. But I just find the irony too great to resist:

Personally, I miss the dinosaurs. Too bad about the comet, lack of oxygen, and cavemen who did them in. Life would be much more interesting with a few pterosaurs flying overhead.

Too bad the dinosaurs are all gone as for the varmints in Washington D.C I wish that all them were gone via term limits and that we could get a new set of varmint. Rattlesnakes would be good replacements because you can hear them right before they bite you.

Unfortunately, for the poor people of TEXAS, those no good for nothing mangy varmints known as Old George W, & Laura will be back in TEXAS in a few years. We have already been cursed with the varmints known as Rove and Gonzales. I would rather sleep with a rattlesnake than have the like of these varmints back in the GREAT STATE of TEXAS.

OK, here's my take on the "joke." I'm an atheist, and I think much of religious dogma of all kinds is sort of a joke, but I understand the usefulness of parables, and I think that very few religious people take such stuff literally.

So, it doesn't seem all that funny to me. And, as the father of a 4-yo, I can sort of see the usefulness of trying to teach kids a lesson via such a story, but it's certainly not a tack I would take with my own kid.

I just tell her that if she screws up, a giant meteor might strike her.

sadly, many DO take such stuff literally. And some of them even get elected to high offices and formulate public policy on the assumption this stuff is "factual." And that's no joke.

Have you watched any cartoons lately? I'm more worried about consumerism than religion.

Kids do take stuff literally, but they're supposed to develop critical thinking skills when they get older. My kid wants to be a pink power ranger. She doesn't want to believe that the fish and chicken she eats are in any way related to the living creatures she sees. I let her get away with these beliefs because she's a kid.

If she doesn't grow out of it, then yes, she'll have other problems. But if a story is simply an easy-to-remember mechanism for her to behave well, then I don't see the harm.

Personally, I want to raise my kid with a science-based belief system. But I've seen kids raised with other belief systems turn out fine.

Now, it is kind of interesting that the atheists I know are probably the most moral, reasonable, and gentle people I know. But I think that has more to do with the fact that they like to think things through rather than how they were raised.
