We've been considering Colorado for retirement due to it's natural beatuty and low real estate taxes. Someone told a friend of ours that Colorado does have low r.e. taxes, but they make up for it with insane car registration fees. Is there any truth to this? If so, how high are the registration fees? Thanks.

Ejalret, in Colorado you pay property tax on autos, and I assume it varies by county. The tax rate goes down year by year as the car ages. In Colorado Springs, El Paso county, for this year I paid $118.38 to register a 2001 that had an original sticker price of about $20,500 ($91.86 is property tax), and $28.12 to register a 1991 that had a original value of about $19,000. On the 1991 the property tax has bottomed out at $3.

You can probably find the rates for the area you are interested in by looking for the county clerk's web site.

On a house worth $118,000 I paid $571.50 in property taxes.
