Erasing data on old cell phones??

I found DW's treasure trove of old cell phones we used to have. They all have dead batteries in them. Is there a way of erasing the contact data without taking a hammer to them?

Locally, there's a women's shelter called Sojourner Truth house. They galdly take donations of cell phones as they have a way to reuse them..........
