Getting a cell phone without a Social Security #

My BIL is from Norway and is going to college in the States. He wants to sign up for a US based cell phone plan but doesn't have a SS#. I think this is required since the companies can do a background check. Are there any options other than doing a prepaid plan?

Put him on your family plan (what ever you have) and let him pay the bill.
Just a thought, but you could work something like that out if everyone is in agreement and trustworthy.

I was thinking the same thing. That might be the best/only option although putting a college student with family and friends over seas is a little nerve racketing. The first bill might be $1,000 but he's pretty responsible and I'm sure he'd pay his share.

Just get him a prepaid. Boost, Virgin, or any of the like.

I would also sign him up for a VOIP service (Vonage, for example) so he can call home inexpensively.

Perhaps a dumb thought--bring a cell phone from Norway with international calling enabled?

Prepaid Tracfone works for us, but we don't us them much.

He CAN get a taxpayer ID number instead of a SS#.... just use his name...
