house built in 1942. kitchen renovated 4 years ago. all plumbing original to house as far as i know.

good quality faucet in kitchen has started to leak at the base but only a small amount and only every so often. when this happens and i turn on the faucet it lets out what seems to be high pressure air along with water for a few split seconds before settling down.

i don't know if the air was introduced from the city end of the system or from the faucet leak. i also sometimes get this odd air in the system in the bathroom sink though no leak there. happens most often in kitchen not bathroom.

is there some kind of pressure valve outside the house at the city connection that might be defective? is it my faucet? ideas? just sell the house?

Most likely related to the leak. Air works into the system as water leaks. Just replace the fuacet ... you'll be fine.
