I pulled this amazing quote out of the article.

"A 2004 survey by France’s regional health observatory found that just 15 per cent of French women in their fifties and 27 per cent of women in their sixties said that they hadn’t had sex in the previous 12 months. By contrast, a recent British survey showed that 34 per cent of Britons in their fifties and 54 per cent in their sixties hadn’t."

In America at least, the large majority of these women in their 50s and 60s are married. So a fairly good slug of men are going without, or visiting prostitutes, having affairs, etc. And that is the major problem with our system of family law. It is really expensive to get rid of a spouse who is no longer performing, or really fiscally unsafe to take direct measures and try to leave the marriage in place.

My guess is that the >50% of women their 60s who are not having sex in America (if this number is in fact accurate) has little to do with a lack interest in sex. To me at least it seems that post menopausal women still like sex plenty, they are just not driven to get it on any terms like they might have been when they were younger.

So they get treated badly a few times, sex kind of drops to the back of their minds, and before you know it a fair amount of time has passed. So they try again to get some sex on terms that don't seem demeaning, get disappointed again, so it goes out of their minds for another possibly longer time.

If this goes on long enough, they may have definite physical issues that cause even the physical aspect of sex with a man to be not much fun. Let alone some of the less thrilling social and interpersonal aspects.

I have a French housemate who just does not illustrate the French women portrayed in this article. So, it is just not "across the board." Sex?? She has decided it probably just won't happen again...

One of my favorite Frenchwomen of recent times has to be Simone Signoret. A gifted actress who was not afraid to age before the camera. I borrowed a book from the library a while back called "Why French women don't get fat". The gist of it was moderation in food and drink and putting an emphasis on quality rather than quantity.

Definitely I have not. But this is about the 50%, who according to the article have not had sex in 12 months. If accurate , and I have no way of knowing if it is accurate or not, this is a lot of women not having much sex.

Could you be more forthcoming about what you are saying? I assume you are saying that your 60 year+ friends are getting lots of sex, but you may be saying the opposite, it isn't very clear.

What I said about women who are not having sex often makes no attempt to be authoritative, but it is an accurate description of what I have been told by women who were formerly very sexually active but later become much less so.

I really do not think it has to do with being treated badly . From my experience and most of my friends experience is that we are still interested in sex just not as interested as we were at 40. The culprit is hormones and it's not that we don't like or want sex . If offered we will go for it but we are not hot for it like years ago which is sad in a way . Of course older single women looking to mate are still hot to trot . It's just us older mated women that have slowed (not stopped ) down . IMHO

Interesting article. I like the French way of thinking. And I particularly like the 50 year old woman with the 32 year old studmuffin beau...hee, hee, hee!

Your guess is scarily close to correct for many of my single female friends, Ha.

My take.

Starts with is this excerpt, "perhaps the French woman’s inimitable knack of knotting a scarf".

Rewrite the sentence as: perhaps a woman’s inimitable knack of knotting a scarf. It is the allure of sensuality at whatever age. Such subtleties are lost on many men. And far to many men have no sense of style either.

Too many confuse blatant overt sexuality with the far more magical allure of sensuality. Overt, let it all hang out sexuality reminds me of a brothel, and the sex worker. Yes they do play an valuable role.

I assert that income level has little to do with allure. In my travels had met charmingly enchanting women of all ages in grungy places, and cheap hooker looking women of all ages in high priced fashion clothes in "fine dining" circles.

Do plead guilty to overt observation of finely proportioned female bodies in skimpy bathing suits at the beach. Further there have been many times I needed to chin_ups on the curb to get my mind out of the gutter.
I say, the look of two bocce balls glued to chest is somewhat incongruous. There is a time and place for everything.

Ultimately, whatever floats one's boat. As long as one gets what one wants out of encounters and life.

Wasn't there supposed to be an FDA approved drug that was to be the "female Viagra"?

I guess the clinical trials are still going on......

You can take small doses of testosterone to increase your sex drive but you might have to shave areas that you never shaved before !

Lord help us older men if our lady friends want to get it on for four hours, stylishly knotted scarves or no. Unless perhaps it is knotted around the base of one's membro virile.

This is a very interesting thread for a woman of 51 to read, and a little more than scary to think that progressing age may lead to involuntary sexual boredom.
I cannot imagine ever losing interest in dancing the horizontal tango. I am a firm believer in mind over matter. Time will tell how that all w*rks out...
As far as the original article goes, I lost interest after a few paragraphs. The writing style was just a bit "over the top" for me.

Sex (for me at least) is an incredible feeling both physically and mentally. I have a better outlook on life, my body is better for it and it's free.

Sex does a body good.

Now I just have to learn how to tie a proper knot.
