So, turkey or no turkey?

We're doing duck this year. We do the traditional sides, but mix up the meat every year. Goose, venison, pulled pork, bulgogi, pizza, etc.

How about you and yours?

I voted “dine out, turkey,” since we’ve again been invited to join a few sets of our neighbors who gather across the street each year. This will be our 5th Thanksgiving in our new neighborhood, and they’ve invited us every year except the first.

This will be our 3rd year with them, and each year they’ve roasted one turkey and deep-fried another.

Turkey will be served at my nephew's hunting camp along with other offerings. His base camp is an almost 100 year old house in the woods. Neat place.

We celebrate Thanksgiving at a friends place in Mismaloya. Everyone brings a dish and wine and includes ham.

In October, we celebrated Cdn Thanksgiving at another friends place in Vancouver. We take leftovers for sandwiches.

I cooked a lot of Thanksgiving dinners during my younger years, but by now at 70 there is NO WAY I am going to cook a turkey just for the two of us. We both think that would be silly. Besides, I don't want to do it, not gonna happen, case closed.

His family usually has an informal get-together and we might drop by to wish everyone a happy holiday, but we never stay for dinner. We have also been invited to Thanksgiving dinner at a friend's house with many of his other friends, which is very kind of him but being a couple of INTJ's, we would just prefer eating lunch at a restaurant on our own like we always do.

Often turkey in a restaurant on Thanksgiving costs a lot, requires reservations, and involves a lot more food than we can or should eat. So, we normally search for a restaurant that is serving something light from their usual menu on Thanksgiving Day. Chinese restaurants are usually very helpful in that respect.

I do NOT want to gain weight over the holidays this year. So I plan to strenuously and actively avoid anything even slightly resembling a feast.

Every year for the last 10 or so, DW and I say we're going to go out for Thanksgiving or buy a prepared Thanksgiving dinner. And every year we look into it, see the (relatively high) cost for turkey dinner comparable to what we can do ourselves, and stay home. We do the local 5K charity 'Turkey Trot' first thing in the AM, treat ourselves to breakfast out. We usually have cheese and crackers midday, and then start making Thanksgiving dinner (turkey breast, potatoes in some form, a veg, champagne and dessert). A very quiet affair with just the two of us, maybe some football on TV. We've come to enjoy our quiet Thanksgivings together.

My wife prefers to make the traditional Thanksgiving dinner for the kids and grand kids. We also invite a single friend over so 6 adults and 2 kids. A 15# turkey gives us enough to send some plates home and have enough left over for sandwiches.

Normally I cook but no kids this year so we are going out. Will see a movie first. A few times we went to a friend’s but there’s chaos with the little kids so don’t want to do that.

12 turkey thighs baked at home. Our crew are dark meat fans. We did a test run a few nights ago and the new kitchen appliances did ok, so I presume Thanksgiving should go without a hitch.

Thanksgiving dinner with turkey at DW's nephew's place, about a two-hour drive. We enjoy the company, lots of family present, and the Honeybaked Ham we ordered just arrived today, now safely in the freezer.

I read in a newspaper article about this site for edible insects. Chocolate covered ants have long been a staple, but how about Chirpy Jerky Crickets, salted Manchurian scorpions that glow in the dark, edible diving beetles, Cricket Crunch chocolate bars, whole roasted mealworms, edible locusts, and lots more. DW was saying "No! No! No! No! No! No" but I might order some just to see the reaction.

We are doing both . We are going out on Thanksgiving with some friends and then I am cooking a turkey on Sunday for just us . I love the smell of turkey cooking and the leftovers .

Kids and grandkids will be at our house for thanksgiving dinner. Wife’s brother and his kids are planning to join us as well. Possibility of another niece and her new husband too! Twenty-one pound spatchcocked turkey will be the centerpiece of the meal.

I've cooked turkey just about every possible way, but realized I've never done it on a rotisserie so that's this year's method. I have a fairly small 14 pound bird that should just fit.

We both love turkey, and even love the leftovers, but in recent years we have often done a prime rib roast instead. It's all good.

For me the treat is DW's pumpkin pie.
