What type of potted plant is this, & what’s attacking it ?

I've had this plant for approximately 9 years. I changed the potting soil one time about 5 years ago, & the same thing happened.

100’s of tiny, what look like flies, are in the soil & at the bottom of the plant.
I used this https://www.bonide.com/products/houseplant/view/951/systemic-houseplant-insect-control the last time & it got rid of the problem quickly.

I’ve been applying it from the same container I bought 5 years ago, for about 3 days, but it doesn't seem to be effective.

This started when I placed the plant in a much larger pot, & used potting soil purchased at a true value store if it makes any difference.
I did this approximately 10 days ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are probably fungus gnats.

The plant looks to be a bromeliad of some sort. The insects are either shore flies or fungus gnats. Do a Google search on both to determine which you have and your course of action.

You can use some sticky paper like this to catch them

but, dry out the plant in the meantime. Make sure no standing water in the bottom of the pot.

After doing a Google search, it appears you're right, they are fungus gnats.

Since I posted, I've read several articles online and they all mention letting the plant dry out as you mentioned.
The sticky papers are a great idea as well.
