Would You Take Your Old Job Back?

I was laid off from my j*b in IT about 8 months ago and decided to call it ER. Just recently, I got a call from a former coworker - something back at w*rk broke, no one could figure out how to fix it, and he was looking for some advice from me on what to do. It's the only call like this I've gotten since the lay off. He was very appologetic, and I knew this person well - a good guy who would not have called me unless he was really really desparate, so I didn't mind helping him out. But it really reminded me of how much was hating that job in recent years and how grateful I should be for not having to deal with it any more.

So to answer your question, NO WAY!
And I think this former coworker ows me a lunch now. :)

Not a snow ball's chance in the nether region!

That is my final answer, and I don't need to phone a friend.

I left MegaMotors nearly 3 years ago. It was hell then. I can't imagine what it is like now that all the experienced people have been pushed out and everyone is doing 3 people's jobs. Wow, talk about stress...........:nonono:

Ditto!
BTDT more than once...although even once was more than enough!

:nonono::nonono::nonono::nonono::nonono::nonono:

Some were fun some were a colossal drag. Would not do any of them again, for love or money.

Today's hard w*rk was watching snow plows go by, followed by a trip to the greasy spoon.

Do not say "No". Say "How much?".

Which old j*b?

I wouldn't do my last job at mega-corp for mega-bucks, but my first real job was being a farmer (I took over the family farm before I finished high school and stayed until my younger brothers could take over from me). My BIL's farm is vacant now and I'm thinking of buying it. I've loved my 2.5 years of do nothing retirement and maybe it's time for a do something retirement.

Could I call it a hobby and not a job? Would that let me stay here? I don't need the income from working it.

Absolutely agree. I loved hunting people, they're the most challenging and dangerous game ever created.

But I don't fancy riding the night shift again, at age 50, flipping a coin in the parking lot to see who drives and who rides. Or, as we called it, whose writing and whose fighting.

And to take the last assignment, or the choice of assignments that I was offered? No, no and hell no.

There is an alumni association (i.e., Survivor's Club) that has an annual dinner we go to, and outside they always park a brand-new cruiser with all the latest gear in it. That makes me envious - no more fumbling through map books with GPS navigation, no more hand-printing reports with a laptop with wireless connectivity to Records, NCIC, MVA, etc. and now they're getting scanners that mount in the grille and continuously scan for stolen license plates with optical character recognition.

A lot of the mechanical details that created so much drudgery is going away.

Since I'm still a w*rking stiff, if my old megaconglomocorp offered me enough, I might go back. They won't...

I can't imagine running a farm being a hobby, though my cousins who farm seem to enjoy drinking their way through planting and combining...

But I digress...

I've had the misfortune of visiting a number of doctors lately. My optometrist, and a specialist I saw recently, have gone "electronic". It's amazing to watch them send prescriptions in via email, and have all your info on a laptop or tablet PC. On the other hand, my GP still uses paper. Now overall I'm fairly healthy, and haven't had to visit the GP much, but still, my folder is an inch or so thick, full of illegible scribbling...

He says it would cost him $100k + to convert...

Neither did the places where I were! Chintzy bastards!

They said they loved you, and when you asked for proof of that love...

No. I think that there have been too many changes and I would not be able to keep up, even if I wanted to go back. I enjoyed the interaction (for the most part) with the public, and the push was on to get them out as quickly as possible. One of my co-workers told me after I retired that she has to be almost rude and ignor some of their questions. I was a public servant and would not feel comfortable doing this. My job was to serve the public, not to ignor them in person or not return phone calls.

I keep toying with the idea of getting a flexible, minimum wage job in order to earn the rest of my social security credits. I have been retired for 3 1/2 yrs now and have not convinced myself to this yet. I usually check the Sunday Employment section of my paper. The problem is finding a flexible job. I would not even want a part-time job that had a schedule. I still want to be able to take my trips, play Bridge, go to my monthly retiree luncheon and anything else that comes up. However, when I am at home, which is the majority of time, I would be available to work.

Are we talking THE VERY SAME JOB here, that is, with the same tyrant as boss, the same spineless sycophants, the same unreliable trade unions, the same lazy subordinates, the same politicking, the same me holding the bag in the end, the same disloyal cowards as colleagues....? The answer remains...NO.
If we are talking the same job -in my case HR manager of a big company- under quite different circunstances.....Well, my almost 5 years into ER have rendered me useless as a real productive manager. The company would end up firing me:D!
But as a consultant, them picking my brains for a modest non taxable fee.......:D

I've already turned down my old job a couple times, and I think they're beginning to believe that I really mean it.

Last month I had a chance to tour the USS TEXAS (SSN 775), Pearl Harbor's latest addition to the fleet. It was gratifying to see that a lot of annoyances have been fixed-- the designers clearly must have listened to the chief petty officers. However some things will never ever change.

Despite all the improvements, I wouldn't go back for any amount of bonus pay. One of my fondest memories of sea duty is the quiet period on the bridge after surfacing the submarine on the way into port. But I doubt that my fond memories were really rooted in reality. The next time I want to stand 25 feet above the water at 3 AM sipping a cup of hot coffee while watching the Honolulu city lights slowly heave into view over the horizon, I'll charter a booze cruiser.

Clearly, I am out of step with this group. Totally. I loved working, but I worked for myself which must have made all the difference I guess.
