Are we talking THE VERY SAME JOB here, that is, with the same tyrant as boss, the same spineless sycophants, the same unreliable trade unions, the same lazy subordinates, the same politicking, the same me holding the bag in the end, the same disloyal cowards as colleagues....? The answer remains...NO.
If we are talking the same job -in my case HR manager of a big company- under quite different circunstances.....Well, my almost 5 years into ER have rendered me useless as a real productive manager. The company would end up firing me!
But as a consultant, them picking my brains for a modest non taxable fee.......

I've already turned down my old job a couple times, and I think they're beginning to believe that I really mean it.

Last month I had a chance to tour the USS TEXAS (SSN 775), Pearl Harbor's latest addition to the fleet. It was gratifying to see that a lot of annoyances have been fixed-- the designers clearly must have listened to the chief petty officers. However some things will never ever change.

Despite all the improvements, I wouldn't go back for any amount of bonus pay. One of my fondest memories of sea duty is the quiet period on the bridge after surfacing the submarine on the way into port. But I doubt that my fond memories were really rooted in reality. The next time I want to stand 25 feet above the water at 3 AM sipping a cup of hot coffee while watching the Honolulu city lights slowly heave into view over the horizon, I'll charter a booze cruiser.

Clearly, I am out of step with this group. Totally. I loved working, but I worked for myself which must have made all the difference I guess.
