Hello,

I am curious about something that I don't think I have ever seen here, and that's how much annual income ER'd people have and from what sources does that come from.

There is a ton of information that people give about their resources, investments, portfolios, etc., in various locations in the forums, but nothing on what all those resources and portfolios generate annually.

So:

1. What is your Annual Income in ER?

2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio?

3. What Percentage comes from an employer provided pension?

4. What Percentage comes from Social Security?

5. What Percentage comes from part-time work?

6. What Percentage comes from other sources?

I thought you couldn't collect Social Security until you were at least 59.5 years old? If someone is receiving income from Social Security, I'd suggest that maybe they're not ER'd... they're just R'd. Retiring at age 60 isn't my idea of "early." So is this category even appropriate, if your question is targetted at early retirees?

BanDit1, hello and welcome to the forum. Those are good questions, and although they have been asked and answered in the past, they haven't been asked recently.

Since this is your first post on the forum and you're asking for information that might be of a sensitive nature to some, why don't you tell us a little about yourself and why you're requesting this information.

I will be retiring next year at age 61.5, and plan to "pay myself SS" until I can withdraw it. It looks like this is how it's going to shake out:
1. What is your Annual Income in ER? NOYB
2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio? 67%
3. What Percentage comes from an employer provided pension? 13%
4. What Percentage comes from Social Security? 20%
5. What Percentage comes from part-time work? 0%
6. What Percentage comes from other sources? 0%

If the market drops out completely I will still be OK (though not thrilled about it!), since my expenditures in recent years have been quite low and I really don't want or need very much.

If the market does well, I will be able to spend several times more in retirement than I spend now (if I want to).

SS can be an important part of retirement budgeting even before you start to collect. I'm not collecting SS yet, but spend a little more now based on the fact I'll collect SS in the future.

If you have trouble with this concept, try some Firecalc runs including future SS in some and not in others.

1. What is your Annual Income in ER? Enough to cover expenses twice
2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio? 17%
3. What Percentage comes from an employer provided pension? 47%
4. What Percentage comes from Social Security? 36%
5. What Percentage comes from part-time work? 0%
6. What Percentage comes from other sources? 0%

I am retired, and I am not currently drawing SS. I have three pensions, one Cola one without. I am currently drawing one of those not the other two. Right now I am living on Savings and the one Cola'd pension and they are about 50/50.

1. What is your Annual Income in ER?
Ok, not spectacular.

2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio?
100%
4. What Percentage comes from Social Security?
0% now, eventually it might be 20% or so. However if my investments do horribly, SS will of course be a higher %.

5. What Percentage comes from part-time work?
0%, but always a poossibility.

6. What Percentage comes from other sources?
Like what? Don't get any alimony, extortion profits, stoolie payments. Have any other suggestions for me to try?

:2funny: When I read that, I didn't understand either. I could just visualize myself panhandling for dinner or something.

Royalties. Maybe from your next album or dance video? :)

1. What is your Annual Income in ER? --- About 185% of working salary.

2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio? ---About 27% from dividends/interest. Don't need to ever draw down investments principal for rest of my life, but IRA MRD's will make me.

4. What Percentage comes from Social Security? ---Will start SS in a few months. Then it will be about12 or 13%.

5. What Percentage comes from part-time work? ---None.

6. What Percentage comes from other sources?
--A percent or two (classaction lawsuit proceeds and the like).

Based on that, I should not be on this board. I retired a hair early but am now on SS.
SS=38%
Pension=10%
Other (rent)= 29%
Port=23% (represents 3.4% of current port)

For those whose portfolio withdrawal represents a significant portion of their income it would have been interesting to see what % of their current portfolio that number represents (I posted that figure).

Age 49: 40% dividend stocks, 60% real estate(for sale by owner) - we ate the duplex.

Age 55: 52% pension(non cola), 28% real estate, 20% stock dividends.

Age 64: hand grenade wise 40% pension plus early SS and 60% trad IRA/stocks depending how I throttle up and down(5% variable target benchmark).

heh heh heh - Oh and toss in a year or so of jobshopping in early ER age 52 or so. More than one way to skin a cat! Be cheap(er frugal) with flashes of extravagance - 'agile, mobile, and hostile.' per Bear Bryant's linebackers.

2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio? 63%

3. What Percentage comes from an employer provided pension? 37%

45, 100% of expected annual income comes from investment portfolio. Will sell second home in about 35 years and get an annuity or something like that.

1. Enough to cover 3 times expenses.
2. 38% (Investments all FDIC/NCUA CD Ladders)
3. 36% (Military COLA'd)
4. 26% (Old Folks Insurance (usually referred to as Social Security))
5. 0% (You have to be kidding)
6. 0% (What is this and is this legal?)

Does not include gifts (more or less Net to 0), Cash Rebates on Credit Cards etc., and any pennies found in the parking lots.

1. What is your Annual Income in ER?
100% of my net pay during my working years (in other words, same as if I was still "working".)

2. What Percentage comes from your investment portfolio?
100% (includes income derived by converting 10% of my original retirement portfolio to an Immediate Annuity upon retirement last year).

3. What Percentage comes from an employer provided pension?
0% (e.g. zip, nada, nothing...)

4. What Percentage comes from Social Security?
Ask me in 10 years (age 70) when I claim it.

5. What Percentage comes from part-time work?
If I had "part time work", then I would be a "part time retiree" (I'm 100% retired  )...

6. What Percentage comes from other sources?
0% ("those that fail to plan, plan to fail")...

I'll have income from all of those sources eventually, which makes the 4% rule of thumb kind of tough to follow. It will take maybe 20 years until we reach a stable balance of pension, SS, and investment income. And we're cheating until DW actually decides to quit work.

In addition, I've got one kid in college and another that will start in 2 years. So my expenses are much higher now than they will be in another 6 or 7 years or so.

No easy answers to those questions!

Dan
