6 months in

It's been 6 months since I retired from w*rk! I haven't done much except rest up, read, relax and hang out but it has been the best 6 months of my life. I am slowly starting to take on new things - next week I start an intensive Italian course - and think about what I want to do with the rest of my life. What I love the most is not having to answer to anyone or any schedule. My morning begins when I feel like getting up and having that wonderful cup of coffee that I now get to linger over.

My plans to move have changed and I'm researching new places to live. The great part is I now have the free time to visit these places.

This forum really helped me with all my newbie questions. Thanks everyone!
 
It is great, isn't it? No alarm clock, no schedule, no clients, just whatever you feel like doing - or not doing - that day.
 
The not doing was making me feel guilty but that lasted for about five minutes!
 
Lincella, I'm six months in also, retired January 3rd. I took a few trips the first few months, in March I joined a walking group. I really enjoyed watching the World Cup as it happened. In the beginning I felt a little guilty if I didn't do something productive each day. Not so much any more. Like you, I enjoy the leisurely morning coffee. My plan was to de-clutter my house and get it ready to sell in 2015 (and figure out where to live). I've cleaned out ONE kitchen cabinet and a few piles of stuff in my great room....I'm having too much fun doing nothing.

I'm about a month into retirement but we are fast tracking decluttering and selling primary home while living in vacation condo. So hiring contractors, trying to do all the change of addresses, changes in insurance, etc., and I feel like I'm working more than before. Lol

I love the feeling that I don't have to jump up every morning and get ready for work and I really love that I don't have to dread Sunday nights any more!

Cant wait to be six months in!!!

I'm also "de-cluttering" - I think I spent one day out of 6 months on it! I also hope to move - but have no clue where. I live in the SF Bay Area and could never buy a home here. That's probably why I'm not rushing the de-cluttering...As an example, this morning I had my lovely coffee (Illy, try it, you'll love it) with heavy cream, walked the dog, bought a Zoku slushy cup and am only now contemplating breakfast.

I retired at 54 to get healthy, enjoy life and free time. What I do in the future will just be icing on the cake. (I want to write, but of course, the patio with a margarita in hand is much more fun)
 
Deb, that Sunday night depression was horrible, wasn't it? When I first retired and felt that - oh crap tomorrow is work - I had to stop myself and that nauseating feeling soon went away. Almost every night I think, Yeah, I don't have to go to work tomorrow instead!

Congratulations on your 6 month retirement anniversary! :dance:

We very seriously planned to move when we retired, and searched extensively online for every place that met our criteria. We narrowed it down to five places, then three, and spent almost all of our vacation time for the four years before retirement, visiting these three locations. When visiting we found one of them (Springfield, Missouri) to be much more appealing to us than the others.

We retired 5 years ago. We haven't moved yet. :LOL: We haven't even sold our houses yet. Retirement has been wonderful all by itself and sufficient motivation to move (or get an MBA, or take up piano again, or learn Spanish, or whatever) just hasn't been there.
 
W2R - yeah, people at my old job ask what I do all day and I always reply - whatever the hell I want! Some of them find unstructured time anxiety-fraught. They also ask when I would get another job - huh? If I wanted to work I wouldn't have retired. I was caring for my mom for 9 years and when she died last year I just said - I don't need a huge amount of money, I just need a huge amount of time. So here I am.
 
Six months in myself, DW is still w*rking, but for only 15 months for pension and to finish school. I am so busy I find I don't get everything done and like other trying to figure out how I had time to w*rk.

Congrats on the retirement and I am also w*rking on the De-cluttering, but it is hard when DW still wants to buy stuff, like today she mentioned getting a patio umbrella and I told her it would be just one more thing to sell at the yard sale before we moved. She thinks I am getting pretty cheap too.
 
Understand about the decluttering. I started out with once a week fill a trash can, now it's down to maybe once a month. But as long as I keep at it, it'll get done eventually.

No anxiety about unstructured time here!

I'm having a good time with photography and now actually doing some nice prints, mounted matted and framed. DW wants this one at 13"x19" on the dining room wall. It's a macro shot of a flower that is maybe an inch and a half in diameter.

My Mom lived with me before she died and this house is just too big. I too was her caregiver during her surgeries. I never go upstairs and I have yet to unpack her suitcase or deal with her clothes etc (she died while visiting relatives/friends back east.

"Whatever the hell I want" has been my response to many also. @Walt...beautiful flower!
 
Congrats! I'm six months in too! It's wonderful . It really takes six months just to get use to being retired. The freedom is something that's fantastic. The dreaded Sunday night, Monday morning blues is non-existent. And, according to my ER friends, it only gets better.

You sound like me/us. Our plan is to sell the house in the next 6-12 months and move to California from Texas. Northern Cali that is. Either the SF Bay Area or the foothills east of Stockton, south of Sacramento.

Time has flown by for me. Texas to California quite a cost of living difference, lovely part of the country.
 
Yeah, I agree. SF Bay Area is one of the most expensive areas in the country. Kaufmanrider, where in Texas are you coming from? You must have quite a portfolio to handle the move to Cali.
 
congrats LinCella.... also 6 months in.. first couple of months were a little confusing for me.. some anxiety about my new status, but smoothed out well and am loving it. Good luck with the Italian lessons and the move!
